'93 4Runner question

I'm new to this forum so bear with me if I don't know the protocol. I have a 1994 4Runner SR5 V6 4WD. A noise has been coming from my front passenger -side wheel well. Sounds like a chain being dropped over and over when I drive. I can also hear the sound in my dash board from the heater vent. Just had an axle replaced due to a damaged CV boot and the mechanic stays that the shaft between my axle and differential is loose and is likely the cause of the noise. The truck has 240,000 miles but the engine was (supposedly) rebuilt at 90k. Any advice as to how serious this is or what my options are? Im not exactly swimming in cash at the moment.

If the shaft between the Diff and axil is loose then why didn't he tighten it up? When changing the CV joint there are 5 bolts that hold it on so why leave them loose? If he was talking about the wheel bearing being loose then most likely they need replaced.
