93' Runner heat up issue

Can anyone tell me why it takes SO long for this 4Runner to get to operating temp? Stock 3.0. It is my sons ride, we live not far from his high school and there is no way it will heat up even before he gets there. Winter is gonna suck with it the way it is.
Could this just be a simple thermostat issue?
Thoughts? Thanks

Happened in my mazda, thermostat was stuck in the OPEN position. When I'd haul 70+ on the freeway my temp would fall yo just 1/4 of the gauge. Was slow on the warm up also

I would say the tstat is a good place to start

I would 2nd 9494runner. Some of the thermostats that you buy have like a auto lock when they go out to stay open so you dont over heat if they go out. That could be what in your sons runner. And for $15 its a cheap easy place to start.

a thermostat is s good place to start.

exactly how far is the drive to school? is it possible, its just too close to get the engine warm?

a lot of really short trips is really bad for a vehicle.

Back when I was a kid we didn't have 4 Runners to get to school in. We had to walk uphill both ways in bare feet at least five miles each way.
