94 4R Fuel issues?

This is'nt my truck i'm just gonna try and interpret what this little Mexican fellow has asked me. It's a 94 3.0 and when he fills it full of gas it runs fine but as soon as it hits a half tank it starts running ruff and when stopped at a light or something it will die, I have no knowledge in the earlier model 4runner's so i cant really help him but maybe one of you guys maybe know of something to check.

but would'nt a hole cause the ruff running and dying to happen all the time not just when it gets to half a tank?

Not if the hole is halfway up the pickup tube. Truck would run fine until the fuel level drops below the hole and it starts sucking air.

I'm not saying that's what it is, but it'd be easy enough for him to check.

Easy access to the fuel pump under the rear seat. No need to drop the tank.
