94 4runner a/c

So I bought a 94 and have had it for around 6 months, I've had it in northern Idaho during the winter where obviously the a/c wasn't used. But now that I've since relocated down to southern california, I've noticed how crappy it is. I don't know if it worked well prior to getting down here or just noticed it now, but the when I get in my car I can be driving it for about 10 minutes BEFORE I can even recognize a drop in the a/c temp, and its probably a few degrees cooler than outside air, its almost barely noticeable. Its to the point where its not even worth turning it on because by the time I get to where I'm going it wouldn't have dropped significantly to cool me down.

Anyways, does this sound like a need to recharge the freon? if so which type of freon does it take? My dad just redid his freon and has an extra canister, and assuming it is the right kind (can't think of which it is off the top of my head), there nozzle for the canister doesn't fit on the nozzle where I would put it. Does it by chance need an adapter, if so what kind and where could I pick one up?

My dad owns a 94 silverado if that is any help as to why it might not connect.

that sounds like you're low on refrigerant (freon), you should run your A/C system every month or so for ten minutes to protect the seals and keep everything in good order. If you didn't do that when you lived in Idaho, then you might have a leak :[. You should go to your local auto parts store and buy some special A/C checking fluid, it contains a red dye that you will be able to see, if there are any leaks in your A/C system. If you do have a leak then trying to refill freon would be a waste of time.
