94 4WD problems

My 4WD is not working properly.
It engages and the 4WD light does comes on.
It seems to grab unevenly, right and left tires alternate getting traction. It also feels like it is under a considerable load. If I am stopped on a downhill grade. the truck does not coast, I have to give it gas to go. When I was going downhill on ice or snow, it feels like all 4 wheels lock up, and the truck starts to slide all over the place. It is kind of nerve wracking, since I bought this truck for driving in mountain snow. When the tranny shifts gears there is a loud clunk also. According to the previous owner, the front diff was replaced along with the engine.
I also have a rumble (like a drive shaft) in 2H at about 50 to 55 mph, getting louder as I approach 70mph.

I'm kind of the same boat I think. I picked up a '94 for the snow and although i haven't had to use 4wd in the snow yet, i tried it here on my property and the back tires just spun trying to go up a lil embankment.

As for the rumble on the freeway, that only happens to me at about 75mph when i have to punch it to pass someone and the rpms go into 4k.

are your tire sizes all the same?

That could create havec with a 4x4 if not all tires sre the EXACT same sixe.

these are two problems i had with my 90. the loud clunck - bad ujoint. mine was horrid sounding. i would look at replacing it as soon as possible. when mine exploded (on the highway no doubt) i got it to a shop and when it went out it basicly slammed into the back of the transfer case and screwed it up. so i would suggest changing that as soon as possible. you can use the tocoma parts for that as i found out they were the same but less expensive.

sounds like also that all the joints need lube or greased.
