95 4runner front right wheel grinding sound

Hey everyone, First post but getting to the point, I drive a 95 4runner with the v6 engine. For about the past year iv had a grinding sound coming from the front right wheel, I've had the wheel bearing replaced because that was the orginal culprate but it hasnt gone away, the only time it stops is when 4wd engages and the gas is held down, or by sharply brake checking. anyone have any clues?

There's two wheel bearings on each side, did you do them both or just the outer? Did you look to see if there's anything caught in the dust shield? You could pull the cv boots back and check for metal bits in the grease.

It was just the outer, and i havnt thought about doing that, i will check that though

Make sure you even have grease in and around that area. I didn't and had a similar problem. I have no idea why, but after adding some around the joint the sound went away.

Could it also be either the transfer case or the auto locking differential? I payed a bit more attention to it, it will make the sound no matter what in 2wd, but in 4wd it will only do it when trying to maintain speed, letting off the gas completely or accelerating stops it.

Could just be a bad CV axle since you can make it go away a little in 4WD. I'd also suspect the inner bearring. I would always change inner and outer together, and if I do one side, I would do both sides.

Hold up, I think you mean auto locking hubs, not differential.

Jack up the truck and spin the wheel. Then start taking off parts till you find where its coming from. You can download the factory service manual from a thread pinned to the top of the classics section. If you can get a video of the sound, we might be able to help more if we can actually hear it.

If just the outer bearing was replaced. Maybe the race that is installed into the hub was not checked for damage. Usually the race isn't changed. So just and idea.

Jack the rf up with jack under control arm. Grasp the tire at 12 and 6 o clock. Push at 12 while pulling @ 6 than switch.
If excessive play is found by doing this you may have found your problem.

Also spin the wheel while jacked up to feel how it spins.

Theres no play in the wheel, i noticed too when driving down the highway, it wont make the sound (ill try and upload it tmro) when its in cruise control.

Does it stop when you turn one way and get worse when you turn the other way?

You sure it is coming from the wheel? U-joints can make some pretty bad sounds.

Mine made a grinding noise on the drivers front side. Ended up it was the rotor rubbing on the dust shield due to bad bearings/races.

Easy fix. Replace the inner/outer bearings and races. Torque to specs, and tada! No more grinding!
