i have a 95 4runner sr5 3.0. Usually it is a great running truck, however when it is wet outside, (ie raining or roads wet from snow melting) it goes into kind of a limp mode.

The rpms will not go above 1750. I have changed the distr cap and rotor and inspected the plug wires all good. I don't really know where else to look. Once the roads are dry and it is not raining the truck will be great again. I need some help with this please. NE PA winter is here.....

thanks all

Have you changed your air filter? Or take a look at the intake and TB to make sure they are gunk free?

when i changed the cap i thoroughly visually inpected them. Also a few days ago while it was running this way, at night dark night i popped the hood looking for any sign of spark....

changed air filter, changing all plugs and wires, (number 5 is a pain). I did 2,4,6 and it was limpy and it is dry out. going to check for an electrical issue after plugs are done
may throw on fuel filter too.

Mounted on the drivers front fender there should be an igniter module. Unplug everything going to it and dry it out. Then reconnect it and test.

i was sitting thinking yesterday about this issue and recalled a time in the summer when I saw some sparking near that igniter/coil. I couldn't see where it was coming from and taped up the wires, I am wondering if something there slowly went bad.

Since doing the plugs/wires/air filter the problem became more consistent it now does it on dry days about 2 mins after starting the truck, and there is a big lack of power in the first 2 mins.

Tomorrow I am going to the yard and grabbing a couple of them and changing them hopefully that will do it.

I also noticed yesterday, that before the problem starts when I hit the gas while in park it does act like there is a rev limiter around 3000 rpms... is there a rev limiter is could it be related to this problem?

thanks

I have been chasing the same damn problem for two months and three individual times it has happened to me...same problem...1800 and it's like a rev limiter hits, drops to 500 rpm then climbs back to bounce between 1800 and 500. I've done everything you speak of, and after the last bout of reduced power/rpm, I limped it home, and even unhooked the battery to clear any codes from the computer. What's strange is I took the truck today (strange that this post is here today), had it put on a diagnostic reader, and the only code it picked up was a malfunctioning EGR...thinking back, when I did the complete treatment of Sea-Foam, I sprayed the throttle body, and as far into the intake as a spray bottle would get, let it sit, put it back together, and let the smoke pour...I'm wondering if a chunk of carbon got into the EGR system (?) someplace and plugged a orifice of some kind up?
Saturday I'm going to pull the EGR off and see what can be seen, but I am still chasing the same problem you describe, and have checked TPS, distributor and connections, etc. Problem I've had is, how do you check everything on the side of the road when is screws up, and by the time I limp it home, it seems to clear up...so what do you check?

here's the post's prior to this:

here's on of the PM's I got after talking with Nate:

Re: Need help please

You are going to need a volt meter at the minimum.

TPS could have went dead after 1800 I will provide all the testing procedures at the end.

When is the last time you changed the fuel filter?

If the fuel filter is new, check fuel pressure from idle to when the problem occurs.

Pull your distributor cap and make sure you rotor isn't cracked, also look for obvious wear and damage.

Your pair valves are functional. It's what's telling them to turn on and off, that is another problem. I don't believe it is related either.

Ignition coil may be gone, cant keep up with the higher pulse.

You need to check the AFM and the TPS with a volt meter to rule them out.

AFM Test
TPS Test
Fuel Pressure Test
ECU and CEL test/codes
Ignition Testing

just put on the 'new' igniter and coil from the yard and it seems like it may be fixed, the only thing i noticed is that i have to ease into the throttle if i punch it, it does the same thing briefly before rising.

Also noticed a couple of small breaks in the wiring going to the igniter that weren't noticed before. The igniter is not the exact same numbers as the one I took off. The one I put on had 201 on it mine had a Pxx number on it. Don't know if that makes a difference. We will see as I drive it through the weekend.

Thought I'd re-post after the weekend's work...as said in previous post, I got an EGR code, and would remove, clean, and inspect. Got everything pulled apart, and found the EGR diaphram was junk...replaced with a new one (almost a couple hundred bucks) and re-assembled. Will be taking the truck back to Washington this weekend and hoping for the best, I test drove for about 30 miles with varied conditions, and no problem as noted before...?

still have the problem intermittently. on my days off guess im standing out there with a mist bottle while it is running to try and pinpoint it.
