95' Audio System

I have a 1995 4Runner and I want to put in some new speakers. I am on about a $300 budget but still want to get good qualitiy speakers and sound. Can anyone tell me which speakers will fit or which ones I should look in to? Thanks

I'm pretty much new to this forum, new today. Anyway, I have Alpines from best buy I believe it's item # sps-130a. It wasn't much watts to start off with, much better than stock though. I got an amp from ebay for 100 I believe. Alpine too, I got a good deal. The speakers are 4 1/4. I haven't had any problems.

Here is what I am looking into

Polk db400 for fronts and db650s for rears. $180.00 for all 4 speakers. Go to www.crutchfield.com to check them out and any others you want. You fill out what kind of car you have in the 'What will fit my car' section and they will list all the speakers that will fit what you want and also whatever stereo too. It will filter only the items that will fit your car when you look.

Put a Profile AP740 to push those four speakers for only $130.00 and you've got a banging system for $310.00.

It's all brand new and matching.

Do you have a HU (head unit or stereo)? Pick one up too. You don't need to have all the bells and whistles, just one that plays what you listen to, CDs or IPOD or AUX for XM or Sirrius input and has pre-amp outputs. I found one at Crutchfield for $100 in the clearance rack. A good SONY XPLOD that is a CD and AUX input for my XM SKYFY2 or IPOD. It has preamp outputs to go to the amp. I have two 10" PYLE with a 2.5" VC and 80 oz. magnet!!!! That is 5 freaking LBS, man. It thumps hard and acurate. Look and listen before you buy and don't run to BEST BUY to get something. There are better quality stuff around for about the same price and you might find better deals at local stereo shops. Nothing against BBuy stuff, but the RFosgate stuff there is mass produced low quality products to make high margins for the stores. Check with other people around to see what they have too. Not your friends. They usually tell you what you want to hear.

Go listen to a set and see what you think. I can tell you all day long a set it better sounding but if you like a set of the ones i tell you, then get them.

I like memphis and Jl speakers. Memphis also offers you DIYers a 1 yr warranty while you'd be lucky to get 90 days from anyone else. And they are 3 yr if you have your memphis dealer do it.

When you listen to a set in the store they will sound different in your car. If it is a box, then see if there is anyway you can have them run wires to your car with the box in it to listen to it. Just for the sub of course. Definitely listen to the speakers first and find out what is driving the speakers on the rack. If the shop has amps driving the speakers you are listening to, then you put them in your car hooked up to the stereo without an amp and wonder why they don't sound as loud, then you know it is because of the amp. Different amps perform differently as well. For instance, IMO - Kenwood sucks as a subwoofer amp. It may say it is a 100W amp, but I think the Kenwoods lack current which is more important for good, deep accurate bass. Find a set of subs that you like. JL audio makes some real nice subs like Tarheel said. IMO, don't get anything bigger than 12" because then you loose accuracy and it will be muddy in the higher bass notes. Once you find that set of subs, test the amps with the sub you want to get. You will find some amps will push them really well and some may not. It depends on what sound you want out of them. You may find that a cheaper amp pushes them really well and better than some name brand more expensive ones. The amp is crucial to the quality of the sound. A super cheapo amp will make the best subs sound like sh!t and a quality amp will make cheapo subs sound better than high quality subs. The cheapo subs just won't last long.

A sub is only as good as its amp, and vis versa.

every shop you go into is going to have every speaker amped, sub or midbass doesn't matter. If they don't have it amped, they are a cheap shop so I wouldn't buy from them.

As far as nothing bigger than a 12, I semi agree. JL actually did the 13.5 which gives you the performance of a 15 without losing clarity.

And for the most part, a lot of shops will do a 30 day upgrade policy. So say you get something and don't like it, you can change your stuff out. Buy from a quality dealer and get quality products.

Kenwood really isn't all that bad...I'd take them over quite a few brands. Sony on the other hand... you couldn't pay me to take sony shit. But comparing most anything to JL and JL wins. And don't get confused with JBL and JL... they are NOT the same.
