95 head gasket

I'm in the process of doing the head gasket on my 1995 4Runner. I bought the truck for $900 off craigslist from a very good honest seller. It has 150000 miles currently. The interior is mint and exterior is what is expected for a 95 but still in great shape. Everything works great just needs a head gasket hopefully. Anyways I have a couple questions as I'm new to 4runners and this forum. I need to know the best head gasket I can purchase. I was gonna go with OEM but if there's anything better out there lmk. Also I'm doing timing belt and water pump while I'm in there. Is there anything else I should take care of while its torn apart? I'm gonna get the heads machined if needed so save your words. Also I would like to know all the torque specs for the heads and cam gears when they go back on, if someone could give me that info as well. Also I'm assuming no one gets the exhaust manifold off before removing the the heads as I'm seeing there is a nut under the manifold in the center with seems impossible to get to. Any info would be much appreciated. Also I'm having trouble getting the cam gears off. Anyone have any ideas?

Somebody will have to confirm this procedure with a Toyota but with two other brands I'm very familiar with and my Briggs and Stratton, you loosen the center bolt about 1 turn, apply modest but friendly pressure with a pry bar behind the pulley and tap on the center bold with a friendly but not oppressive whack. Or you put a puller on and apply a friendly but not oppressive amount of tension and then a friendly but not oppressive whack on the center bolt of the puller. With the first option, you have to have a place to pry that will not cause damage.
 
I keep beating the Felpro drum

I have not see every gasket type available, handled four types, but I much like Felpro's current offerings (about $140 for a full head set).

You could save a couple beans by going with no name ebay sets but who knows what you get. I dont like to save money that costs me money later.

Factory is never a bad choice but horribly inflated, guessing 300~400 for a head set ?
IF you have to go factory ( the timing belt is about the only thing I insist as Toyota, and thats probably just habit) a good price checker is here Toyota 13753-65740 Shim, valve adjusting - Toyota genuine OEM part, replace the part number with the new item.

Felpro head gaskets imply they go on dry, but I have this Chrysler gasket dressing a spray can , some v.fine red sealer, that seems good for microscopic passages. I would not use those old copper sprays.
Other advice;

Do the valves ( machine shop work). opps I just saw you comment to save the advice. I wouldnt bother with a high mile head job without the extra trouble of a valve grind & lap in. Check the resulting seat seal ( leak check assembly with solvent ). Check the springs for dimensions, if not actual spring force.

Check the block deck for flatness. Sorry if it don't pass muster. Better to know now ...

Check your cams for wear grooves where they run in the seals. If there is a marks, good chance it will cause an aggravating seep or leak behind the belt, mucking all that up. If worn, National makes "seal savers" or somesuch name, its a stainless sleeve that hammers down to refresh the seal interface without having to go to a different seal ID. They make these in lots of sizes, I put them on this motor on both cams, both crank seals, and the torque converter.

There is a PVC union down at the HDepot that will just fit over the cam to use as a seal driver. May have to sand it out a bit so it does not get stuck on the cam . Lightly oil the seal outer face to slide it in easier w/out cocking, just straighten it out of it does, it should recover unless its really bent up. Sometimes I try a LITTLE sealer on the outer face instead. Seal the rear plug too. Put some lube in the cavity between the seal flanges, dont put it on dry.

USE NEW HEAD BOLTS every removal, these are deforming bolts that stretch at spec. So are the crank girdle bolts fwiw. Im sure lot of people ignore that, but it would take me about one broken head bolt ( or worse, a under clamped & totally unknown to the builder) to skimp on that $30 like never.

Theres more to torquing head bolts than just a number, but briefly the FSM says torque the 8 bolts in rounds up to 44Nm / 33ftlb, then another 90degrees ( use paint marks to check that deg) , then ANOTHER 90degrees , on a CLEAN (I mean NEW) LIGHTLY OILED bolt ( threads, washers and heads) in a clean ( chased ) hole.

FSM says install all the brackets and particularly exhaust manifold BEFORE installing the head, this is to deform the head BEFORE torquing down, to avoid shear stress on your nice new seal interface.

Check your ex manifold for flatness, these seem to erode bad as any Ive seen , and a out of flat iron manifold can warp your expensive and careful head prep.

Get the damn manual. You can often get them cheap from some one who didnt read it and now has a useless truck.

Again while I like Felpro, and their stem seals too ( ex and in are different mat'ls) , but check those even, I just found one that was mis-molded, had a little mold flash in the hole making it out of round, no way would it have sealed well.

Set the valve gaps. Carefully. A proper valve grind (seats, faces and even tips) should change all these settings, most likely decrease them since the valve moves into the head. Aim for high spec particularly on the hot cylinders , 6 & 5 , particularly the exhaust gap.

I just did gapping on the bench using v.light weight springs , there is a spring at Ace Hdwr that works great on lots of motors, and I dont want to own the special tool to release the shims from the regular springs.

A little puff of air sometimes works where a sharp pick wont for popping the shims out of the bucket.
I just so happen to have bunch of perfectly good shims available in common sizes that someone might benefit from, imagine that ? They are at least 8 bucks at any dealer, and who cares if these are worn polished, your cam will accomodate just as well as a new one on an old cam. Basically you use feeler gauges to check gap, and pick a thicker or thinner shim to correct.

The FSM has no special word on cam sprocket removal, should be a nice slide fit. Treat it like a woman; persistent jiggling gets those stripped.

Lastly - Toyo seems to absolutely LOVE to use specific bolts everywhere on this beast. I am picking up the pieces of long stalled project that got a little jumbled, so I got that going against me, but when dismantling, card or mark very specifically what bolt came from where. I am finding bolts a couple mm's different length; use the wrong one and you might punch thru some casting, bottom out before clamping, or skimp on the thread engagement.

Thanks for your advice on everything. I just went ahead and ordered myself the Haynes repair Manuel. Also you at correct about the OEM head gasket set. It runs about $350. But I'm willing to spend the money if it's good quality and will save me from doing this again 50000 miles down the road.
 
most of the little stuff in toyota gasket kit probably has alternate source ( national, skf, etc) markings on it , in addition to the outrageous price mark up. The infant mortality in a head re-work job will probably be a blunder ( scratch on the head, a hair falling on the gasket, etc) rahter than a parts issue, except for some look-alike crap chinese kits you can find for $50.

The felpro head gaskets looks like a major auto part corporation put a lot of engineering talent into it. Get it you'll see. Keep it pristine until you install it.

I have a lot of haynes manuals, but the toyo service manual is better and not much more $$, a good library might even have it, its online or a pdf is cheaper still

One more thing I'd suggest doing on that 3VZE! Have the heads magnafluxed! I had to replace a head on a 3VZE once that had 3 head jobs done without anyone ever checking for cracks, lo and behold, the driver's side was cracked and after replacement, the head gasket held up for a long time before it parted ways with the owner!
 
Another question is im looking down my heads at the valve stem and I see this crap. Also there is no carbon build up like the rest of the ports. It looks like water has been getting in there because I see what looks like rust. Any ideas?





This is what the reast of them look like looking down the port compared to the first picture. In the first picture there is no carbon build up in the port, Just the rusty looking crap on top of the valve.

This is where I finished today. Passenger side gasket is shot. Drivers side wasn't nearly as bad.

I also have paper work for the head gasket before this one I'm currently doing. It was done at 125000 miles. The mileage is currently 150000. I have read into the problems that may cause this failure, but seriously that quick?
 
HOLY CRAP BATMAN!!! That block will definitely need, at the very least, a hone job!

There really is no reason to replace the head gaskets on that engine, even if it held compression there, the walls are beyond its usefulness, you'll just blow the bottom half out (been there, done that, got to rebuild a whole engine after trying to do a head gasket on the cheap!) on your first start up!

Time to just pull that motor out, strip it down to the block, have a shop check to see if it will need to be sleeved or it can be honed or bored out. Redo it right from the start, you'll thank yourself in the end.

Just how long has it been since this engine was run? #3 cylinder looks like the piston hasn't moved in years! It also doesn't look like anyone ever used antifreeze in that vehicle, which would make quick work of ruining the water sleeves and tear that gasket up! Its amazing to see what a steel block, coupled to an aluminum head with a metal gasket in between the two, and straight water can do. The amount of galvanic corrosion and how quickly it happens is absolutely amazing!!!

Most likely a hardened version of oil sludge and antifreeze mixture. That does not look pretty.

Slowerthanyou, the junk and gunk that you're seeing in the head port, which cylinder is it on? Looks like it'd be cylinders 1 & 3.

I've got to agree with the previous comment to pull entire motor and send to machine shop. Rebuild the entire thing.

You've got water leaking into your throttle body somewhere, gumming that up and rusting your valves. Blown head gasket has destroyed the passenger side piston walls; 1 & 3 at least needed honed at minimum. Check the bore wear, between that and the rust, I'd bet they need over bored. Crank and rod bearings need inspected due to the water intrusion; since you've got no clue how long the PO ran a bad head gasket... A new gasket should have lasted much longer than 25K miles.
 
The walls of the block seem to be fine. After I took the gasket off I cleaned everything up really good. That being said I'm not a mechanic, this is a learning experence for me but my grandfather is helping me and he has been a mechanic his whole life. He said the walls surprising look great. The picture looks awful because I literally just took the heads off and haven't cleaned anything up yet. But with that being said to answer your question the truck sat for around 5 months. Also there was water in the coolant and that could play a big factor on why there is all this crap and rust.
 
rebuild or replace that thing, dont skimp .

Not to diss grampa but the bores are toast, the rings wont seat , it will be a smoking low compression mess, it might even break a piston.

Do it right or get it wrong

cheer up, a guy posted pix here with more sludge gunk and goo than yours

and that was AFTER his rebuild! He buttered the cylinders "to keep from seizing a piston" or some such nonsense, when he actually probably hydrolocked the thing first turn over (maybe he got lucky and the grease smothered the spark, so it never ran)
