95 rear window not working, motor can be heard working

My rear (very back) window stopped working. I can hear the motor try to move the window, but it won't move it without me pulling or pushing the window up or down. Window seems to be in the holder okay, it does move down easier that up. Do the teeth on the motor go bad? (get worn). It seems all is working, the relay can be heard, and the motor can be heard, wiper is up. Worked two days ago, now doesn't go up at all, except when manually lifted while running motor. The gears seem to move okay, nothing rusted together.

I just fixed the back window in my 4runner. What happened was the rails that are attached to the bottom of the window were all rusted out. I got two new rails and the rubber that is used to attach to the window. The little wheels on the scissor arms didn't want to move through the rusted section anymore. It goes up super easy now. I also used white lithium grease in the rubber side rails. Smooth as butter. I think the fix was around $30 and a little bit of elbow grease. Good Luck.

Did you buy the new window rails and rubber parts from a Toyota dealer?

Had you noticed the window lifting slower? Mine was lifting slower than normal the last few months now that I think of it.

I did buy them at a toyota dealer. I wanted the real deal. The window was lifting very slow and just stopped, they were so rusted out that one ended up breaking off and then the window went up/down crooked.

I'll post the part number once I get them ordered.

I'm wondering if I can "raise" the window far enough to replace the tracks and rubber. If anyone knows, let me know. Seems like I recall having my tailgate down, and then tripping the safety catches so the window would work and I could raise it enough to see the rails.

you have to take the window completely out... so that will work to change the rails... but I'm sure it will be a PITA.
 
Did you take your glass out by raising it enough to get to the rails, or will I need to remove the interior metal plate and plastic trim and all that junk? Thanks !
 
yeah, you have to take off the carpet on the tail gate, then remove the metal case, then raise the window while the gate is down. You'll be able to see the scissor arms which are attached to the bottom of the window, you need to get the scissor arm off those rails... which are attached by wheels, you will be able to do this by rolling it up and down till you get to the sweet spot where the wheels will be able to pop out. it takes a bit of patience, but it's pretty easy. Have a friend with you, because you don't want to damage the rear glass.
 
Got the old window out, tracks off, am trying to reuse tracks and rubber from an old window I had. Man that track was rusted and ready to break.

NewVillian.....my question is........ what technique did you use to reseat the window in the tracks/rubber? I've got it close, but not fully seated and have tried wedging the window and hammering the track on to the glass, but it's not working. Also tried wedging the tracks and pushing/tapping the glass. No luck.

Parts numbers........ you will need (1) 69907-35010 channel assembly (1) 69907-35020 channel assembly and (2) 69971-35020 filler, FR Door G. Total parts cost at my dealer.... $84.94 plus tax. That is why I'm trying to use tracks from my old tailgate... so I can return these new parts if possible.

I have this exact same problem. Glad I found this blog. Thanks for sharing. Curious if the glass is only attached by the rubber groove on the channel or do I need something else to hold it in place?
 
The rubber holds the glass. The metal channel has a groove, the rubber slides into that groove. The rubber is tiered, or sort of "steps tighter and tighter, so once you shove the glass all the way in, the rubber is forced by the channel to hold the glass very tight.

My job is not complete. I thought you had to seat the glass with the channels in place. The dealer told me no...... you take the channels out, seat the glass on the workbench and then put the channels back in place. But my channels are held by plastic rollers, which CAN be removed, but not easily. I think some models might have bolts to hold the channels. Mine does not.

I'm in good with the local dealer and I might take my runner and have them show me how it is done and I will post that asa I know how. If you figure it out please let me know! Hope I have helped you. My official and expensive 4runner manual for my 95 doesn't say a darned thing about how to do it.

Well I oredered the rubber but apparently the metal channels are separate and I'll get them monday. I'll let you know what I figure out. Thanks for the info.

So what I have figured out is that it is Damn tight and I can't get it seated either. Also, If you took the glass out how would you get it back in with the channels in place? I tried bending the channel so I could fit it on the rubber while the rubber was on the glass but still couldn't get it seated well and now my channel is stretched. That can be fixed but, wow it's hard to get it on there.

If you or anyone has this one figured out please do share.

So I figured out that it's hard as hell to get the channel and rubber on the glass. I've soaped it. Stretched the metal. Beat it with a hammer. Ideas?
 
I knocked mine off with a chisel and a hammer. And I did it carefully! But they will come off. I held the window firm and had my wife tap them off actually. No broken glass or scratches. Mine were all rusted.... like your probably are.

Best part is Toyota is going to show me the trick to re-seating the glass and re-installing it into place this week.... so if you can hold off..... I can tell you exactly how they did it!!! Thanks all.
 
Window seating

I didn't know there was a special technique. I just wedged them as tight as I could. The tailgate window has been working fine for over a year now. The old bracket was totally rusted and actually fell off (I only replaced one side as the other side was still OK). I used Toyota parts. $38.

Same deal with mine, just one side. However haven't been able to wedge the glass between the rubber/metal bracket. How did you manage this?
