Got a 95 4runner with 90K on it- was almost mint w/ 40K on it when I got it. I had the transmission fluid changed sometime in the last 6 months, and in Dec. had the AT light come on once or twice. I stopped, restarted like it says in the manual, the light went off no problem. Then a few weeks ago the light went on and stayed on. I was on a trip, so I stopped, let it cool down for an hour then drove home, no light. I took it into the dealer, who checked it out and at first told me that whoever changed the fluid put the wrong stuff in. I said WTF, how could they do that. Then he called back and said they don't make Dexron 2 anymore, and I'm like totally WTF???? He said they could back order it, but it would be 2 weeks. I'm blown away by this point. How could Toyota make a trans that can't perform on standard fluid, and how come noone makes the right fluid anymore? Anyway, then he calls back and says, we can't do it, we can't get the fluid, you have to put in an extra tranny cooler. Should cost you under $200- call my pal at such and such a place- he'll hook you up. By now I can't believe this whole situation, so before I go doing this, I wanna get to the bottom of it. I took the truck out this weekend and got the AT light on, plus a smoking hot tranny. Again, I let it cool, drove slow, no light. W.T.F. is all I can think. Help??? Anyone got any wisdom I can use?
