'96 4runner diesel?

I know my new used SR5 '96 4runner isn't a diesel, but I am wondering where they hid the ignition system. I've done a lot of shade tree mechanical work over the last 35 years: brakes, exhaust, oil changes, plugs, points, cap coil, radiators, alternators, manifold gaskets etc, but I can't find the spark plugs, coil, dist cap and coil on this truck. It has the 6 cyl engine. Where is all this stuff hiding?

And a related question: which repair manual is better...Chilton or Haynes?

your truck has ignition coils they are the six modeules that screw on- top of the cylinders. when you un-bolt the ignition coil it has a boot on it that runs down into the cylinderthat sends fire to the spark plug these modeules take the place of a dist. cap your truck does not have a dist. cap to answer ? I hope I helped ya out.

Yeah, your truck does not have a distributor system. It uses a "waste-spark" system. Your ignition system basically consists of 3 coil packs on the left side of the engine on the valve cover.

Get a Chilton. Haynes usually leans towards European readers/models, though they do refer to US models.

This is the coil pack your looking for.

Attached to this is the plug wire that goes to the other side of the block. Under this is a spark plug. Just unbolt it and it pulls right out. Easy money.
