96 4runner Differential Shims?

Hey what's up dudes?

So I'm in the middle of my first diff rebuild and had a couple questions that im hoping someone can answer...

So I just finished disassembly and I noticed there weren't any adjusting shims in places I believe there were supposed to be. The only place I found a shim was behind the rear pinion bearing and that's it. None behind the front and rear pinion bearing races nor on the carrier side bearings.
So my question is should there be shims or should install my new races without them? My rebuild kit came with a variety of shims.

My other question is about the adjusting washers on the carrier side bearings. One of my marks came off while I was cleaning them [emoji28] so I'm not exactly sure how to get a proper adjustment out of it. Do I just snug it down? Or is this how it's adjusted instead of the shims I didn't find?

Also does anyone knows where I can pick up a non clicking in-lb torque wrench to set my pinion preload? I've been to just about every local hardware store and didn't find anything.

If you are only replacing pinion bearings and cups than you shouldn't have to add anything. On mine the shims were behind the inner pinion bearing, but the shims provided in a set would fit behind the inner pinion bearing cup. The torque wrench you are referring is called a "beam" torque wrench, your best bet is to try and find one on eBay, A tool truck purchase would mean over $300. Keep the old pinion nut handy, to check pre load and backlash and making sure your gears mesh correctly, may require multiple assembles and disassemble. you basically assemble the pinion with no crush sleeve to the proper pre load, install carrier, check that all is good, or where adjustment is necessary(this part is what takes time) and once everything is set up install the crush sleeve and oil slinger and what have you, set pre load, bunch of technical blah blah blah. And then your done.

If you are re using old gears. You shouldn't need to replace any shims. Me elocker didn't have shims. It had thrust washer that adjusted the gears. And the only shim was the crush sleeve. And I used a regular torque wrench. And did it my feel. And don't forget to set your backlash.
