96 4runner LSD: when is it active

When I press my limited slip diff button on the indicator light flashes on my dash. My question is this: When is the LSD actually on? Only when i'm in 4wd (low vs high) or even when its in 2wd?

if you are talking about the rear locker, the "RR" button, it is only active in 4 low in stock trim. There are mods to change this however.

Thanks, yeah I meant the locking diff, not an LSD (long day at work). I'm not planning on doing any mods, but how can I change it so it operates outside of 4wd low?
