'96 4Runner, sunroof not working...

Hello All! First time caller, long time admirer!
We just bought our 96 4Runner (SR5 3.4Ltr. 4X4, pretty well loaded) last weekend! 140K miles, leather is in great shape and everything works. checking the t-belt and waterpump this weekend... but the question is and I've searched and searched before posting...
How do I service the Sunroof? All the fuses and relays are good (not blown) and when you press the buttons it clicks but no movement on the sunroof. I cannot find any discussion on any forums, google search, or the haynes manual I bought regarding the sunroof. This amazes me!

Well, I dont have a stock sunroof, I have an aftermarket sunroof, but try holding the open button for up to 3 minutes...

if its like most sunroofs, it will reset itself.

Sometimes the sunroofs "forget" where they are as far as open and closed, and will do that.

resetting the brain by holding it down MAY help..

someone else may have more ideas.

You could just disconnect the battery for a few minutes.

Guess we are in the same boat. My sunroof went out about 6months ago. I wanna get it fix but can't get any info on it anywhere. Not a big deal though since i gonna take care of tires and left first

Howdy Lars!

I'm in the same boat as you, sunroof motor clicks and makes some horrible noises, but no movement from the glass portion. I'm thinking the gears are stripped inside the motor. To get to the motor, you'll need to drop the headliner...not fun and I just haven't had the urge to dig into it yet.

As far as repair manuals, go to this page and download the 1996-2002 manual for your 4Runner, or just browse the online version: Toyota Tacoma/ 4Runner/ Tundra/ FJ Cruiser Factory Service Manual Page

Browse the sections on "Sliding Roof" (in both 'Body Electrical' and 'Body Mechanical') and you'll find what you're looking for!

Thanks for the input and the info. no sounds other than clicking. I'm not going to worry about the sunroof for now, knowing that it is water-tight!

I just put on new tires yesterday... Pathfinder all terrains. I'm not doing a lift as it is actually for my step-daughter :sobbing: Having it in the stable is making me want to keep it for myself! I'd do a lift and black it all out or rhino line it from the belt-line down. arb bumpers front and rear, safari rack, KC's, take off the running boards and put on sliders. But it's not for me so I'm not going to. And I'd have to get rid of my 09 Subaru STi, which I'm not going to do. I love the power too much.
on a side note... I just took it to get the oil changed and found that it either has or had a major oil leak so the shop (walmart - couldn't take it to my mechanic) wouldn't do the oil change. oil is full though, and hasn't dripped so I'm thinking it's been repaired. I have a friend at the local dealer so he's going to go through it with a fine tooth comb and let me know what it needs.

The logic is all in the Body ECU and the M3 Moon Roof Control relay by the switch. The Power relay controls many other systems and is just an ON/OFF. These are for a 2002, but I don't think there are major changes in this system.

EDIT: I was wrong. The relay/switch part number is the same only for '98-'02. So yours is different, but I don't know HOW different. I'll leave this post up in case it's close enough to be useful. Sorry, I have no info for your year.

hate to bring up an old topic but i am in the same boat.. i hear something in roof click but the sunroof won't budge. any ideas? is there a way to manually open and close it?

It could have some debris in the lifters or track, it's pretty easy to jamb the sunroof. I'd try to tilt it or slide it back while beating around the edge of the glass or push around on the inside of the car to see if you can get it started. Of course you run the risk of not getting it closed if the cable is broken or other issue. Only other way I know is to drop the headliner and see what the problem is.

I have a 1999 with the exact same sunroof issue....clicking but no movement. Unfortunately, the rear part lowered about 1 inch and I can't get it to budge. I am going to my brother in laws body shop to have him check it out. Sounds like the motor is shot....I just want him to figure out how to seal the sunroof for me!! If anyone has messed with this please advise the correct way to remove the switch panel....

Sun roof makes a click but doesn't open or close

1999 limited.. when truing to open and then close sunroof, it makes #1 click sound only. Like it's stuck... after pushing on it, it still didn't open or close...

Any ideas??? I'm guessing I'm gonna have to do headliner drop to figure this out..

I had the same issue. I think the gears will get worn out on the sunroof and won't move. The motor and motor gears are usually fine. I just replaced the whole sunroof assembly.

MunkeyTX, I saw your post about the manuals and link and was psyched to have a look at the manual for my '96 ForeRunner Ltd. Unfortunately, it looks as though that link no longer works. Would you have a copy or know where I should look?

This is the fist new car I've ever owned and what a choice. This thing has bulletproof, for the most part. Still rides tight with no squeaks or noises.

I removed overhead console and found motor. If switch is pushed should I hear the motor turning or anything? If I was to remove motor is it only the two 10mm bolts and a third under lining and motor should drop out?

Yes just the two 10mm and the one behind the lining. Did you ever get this fixed? Im tackling this now. Motor and switch work but glass won't budge. Need to check the teeth next. Any updates?
