My first post!!
A few months ago I bought a 1996 Hilux Surf (JDM 4Runner). It's a 2.7l 5 speed. I specifically wanted this model, and they are extremely rare here in Europe, so I just bought what I could get. I'm building a second overland truck and am going over every part of the truck pretty much. I have owned a Hilux Pickup for more than a decade, travelled all over in it and nut-and-bolt restored it; every single part, so I am no novice mechanically.
However, this new truck has a few differences, mainly the petrol engine, IFS, and the 4WD system.
Now, if I grab and turn the front output flange on the transfer box, the rumble seems rather loud. I want to open it up just to make sure everything is OK in there. As it has no centre diff, and I have only been on asphalt, I have not had a chance to test if the 4WD system works (and now the engine is out, so I can;t even run it on jackstands).
I have a 5 speed with a part-time 4WD and a straight (H-N-L) shifter. There is an electronic 4WD actuator held on by three bolts to the back of the transfer box. The whole transmission is out of the truck and standing on end, the output flanges are loosened, the three bolts of the actuator are out, but I can't get the thing off. I didn't try prying as I wanted to check the procedure first.
So, finally getting to the question... how do I get the actuator out? Is there a split pin or snap ring on a shift fork which needs removing once the case has been opened?
And secondly, how can I test this unit on the bench? Is it a motor drive?
