We took out SR5 to a transmission shop because 4 wheel drive wouldn't engage. First guy said linkages was fine but it would cost upward of $2gs to fix:smashputer:. Second guy test drove it and put on lift, he said problem was in front axel rear was fine. The front would not lock and it could be simple hose or more but he would not know until he looks into it. It will take a few day since parts what ever they be need to come from toyota. He'll lets us know what needs replacing and the cost before anything is done. He said there was rust,, no surprise on a car this old. What do you think cost will be, best to worsed he gets $95 hour labor.

I would read up on threads that deal with the possible issues with the front diff not engaging. It could be a vacuum hose has come off or more serious problems. Poke around and see if you can get it sorted yourself. At $95 an hour a Saturday reading the forum and having a cold drink could be worth it.good luck and post what you find out.

Ranger,
Get under the truck, remove the actuator switches from the transfer case and the front differential, and exercise the spring loaded balls.
Get some gear oil, push the balls in several times, then reinsert and check you 4wd status.
This will cost you an oversized socket.

Also check the 4WD vacuum-switching-valve on the driver's side inner fender. It's below the battery/fuse box area. Make sure all vacuum hoses are connected and not cracked.

I can't get down to look under the car anymore so. Guy said it needed 1 set 4x4 vacuum switches and only available from toyota  $729.00. He also ran new vacuum lines 3 hours labor $330.00 for total cost $1153.34 :sobbing:. Tried it lights back on again but it steers lot easier than i remember in 4 wheel drive but its been awhile. :ranger:

Oh yea, the tail pipe rusted through so he removed it , off to meineke muffler tomorrow :sobbing::Cry::rain:

Tell me I'm looking at the wrong parts, less than $50 :lasercannon: i had to have water valve replaced on my fridge that supplied water to ice maker $300+ when i checked the part cost $28+
