97 4-rnr brake, 199mm or 231 mm ?

are the 199 rotors the only option, seems I just read that the 231's will fit.

Getting ready to call around for calipers and rotors.

looks like I need:

01' calipers for a tundra ?
and rotors for same ?

It depends on which wheels you are running as to wether the 231mm will fit or not, I am running the 231's, but I have aftermarket rims, if you have the factory 16" they will clear. In my opinion, go big or go home... lol

From what I remember if you have the factory 97 wheels you will have to grind part of the inside down to fit them. The factory 99 and up 5 spoke wheels work with no modifications. I picked up a set of the 99 wheels off craigslist for 220, 1 reason was to fit the 231 calipers when I go to do them.

Well that just sucks. I wanted to do the 231 upgrade somewhere down the road, but I plan to keep my stock 98 six spoke wheels too. Hmmm either go with 199 or switch rims...

S13WE = 199mm (pre 2002.5 Tundra)
13WL = 231mm (2002.5 - 2006 Tundra after TSB)

Im glad i got a set of 2006 Tundra wheels off craigslist. Now i need an upgraded braking setup. with only the front disc, it sucks when trying to stop my Hog plus the rotors are warped and can not be resurfaced anymore (too thin). lol. so my 06 wheels will be no prob ....anyone?

I have done this upgrade. The biggest performance upgrade is the increase in rotor size, which is significant. The calipers matter less. However, if you are going through the trouble, why not go all the way? YMMV.

I'm under the impression 16" wheels limit me to 199mm.

I'm not ready to start removing material from the rims.

231s WILL fit theses rims. no grinding required. Ive been running 231s on those rims for over a year now.

The reason I ask is that according to the build sheet, my 1998 4Runner came with 13" rotors.

I believe on the V6 4runner and 199m Tundras, the rotors are 12.5", but Tundra's are wider and require a wider caliper.

231, though, are even larger.

Whatever... here's the 4Runner brakes from a base model with 15" rims vs 231 big boy brakes

Here is a shot of the rotors side by side anyway:

For reference, the inside hub portion is the same size on both.
There may a slight bit more surface area for braking on the Tundra version (this would be fantastic for towing).
I do also believe they are thicker as well which would resist heat warping that much better.

hey guys just joined this forum a couple of weeks ago. Ive had my runner for a while and decided that since the brakes are done that id do this mod. Im in Canada and the parts for this are very few and far between so i had to settle with the 231mm calipers. I cant afford new rims right now, so i have the stock 16" 6 spoke 4runner rims, I know i will have to cut the dust shield, that i dont care about but how much am i going to have to shave off the caliper?
