97 4runner Transmission Issue

So, no way to make this long story short. History, I have a 97 4runner 4wd Auto 6cyl that had transmission trouble last May. It has sat in the street, in front of my house looking sad and lonely for the past year so I finally pulled the trigger and bought a used tranny from a local salvage yard. The donor, a 98 4runner. With some help from a friend, I got the tranny pulled and the new (used) tranny in. I did a brief compare while side by side. It wasn't until I was connecting the wiring harness that I noticed the first of several issues.
1. The 98 tranny has a 4wd shift actuator on the rear of the transfer case, with electronics pig tail hanging off. 97 tranny does not have this.

2. 97 tranny has a sensor on the passenger side near the rear, with electronics pig tail. 98 tranny does not.

3. Looking back at the 97 tranny that is sitting in garage. The opening in the 4wd shift area is different between the two. 97 tranny has two plates with u shaped cut outs for shifter. 98 tranny has one plate with hole in the middle for shifter.

After doing some research I believe that I have gotten a transmission from a 98 Limited 4wd.

I currently have two problems: 1. I have 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear, but no 4th. 2nd without the wiring harness from a 98 Limited, I will not have 4wd. Any ideas as to why no 4th gear? I am thinking that maybe a shift solenoid is out or the missing sensor or possibly a CPU issue. The check engine light is on (go figure) however I do not have a tester to Id the code. Go easy on me, I have already beat myself up enough about this for being to stupid to do a more thorough inspection.

Can't give any help here, but I do hope for you some experts chime-in.

Weird that maintenance questions are on this forum, and ''engine'' questions are on the ''engine/suspension/wheels...'' forums though.

Okay, doesn't look like any advice or opinion is going to be offered. Thanks anyway! You all have a wonderful day.

The trans should be the same, it's the t-case that's different. My auto went out in my 99 sr5, picked up an auto from a 97 limited. Swapped my t-case over and everything is the same. It's still sitting under the truck, haven't stabbed it yet. Part # is the same on the trans.
