97 Limited Brorunner Build (Pic Heavy)

My name is John and I am the proud owner of my third 97 limited 4Runner this one I picked up for really cheap she was only $280 but she had some problems the guy said that she overheated and that she had her little quirks. Definitely found out there was some rigged repairs on the vehicle but it didn't stop me with the initial cause being so cheap I couldn't say no and plus with the junkyard is being so close down here I have great access to all the parts that I need.

I last 97 I went ahead and left it on Fox shocks and then old emu coils in the back and we went ahead and did limiter straps with the total upper a arm. Really really like the way these things drive off road or so comfortable to camp in and they're just the best hands down that's why I got another one.

I owned her now for about three and a half weeks and decided to pull the heads off the engine to go ahead and find out what's causing the engine to overheat along the way we found a few other little issues but nothing major just something I didn't expect to see you like a C-clamp holding the exhaust manifold flange together and three different types of spark plugs in the engine along with homemade Clips to hold on the headlight housing there was some really really weird stuff with this truck but as of today we have it sitting with the heads already been removed it's my first time doing a dual overhead cam V6 head gasket but since I'm a mechanic I don't really get too nervous about it I just jump in there. The vehicle itself is in pretty damn good condition there's no rust on it whatsoever there's some scratches some minor stuff like that but she does have a new radiator new water pump new timing belts new timing belt pulleys and a few other things to that were also replaced. One problem we have is with the rear hatch the door doesn't like to open or closed because the key is so rounded out so I had to take a tool to take apart the door to go ahead and manually flip the switch inside there that'll be one of the things that I grabbed at the junkyard tomorrow. As of right now the engine is sitting in my living room I went ahead and I painted the intake manifolds to match the valve covers that are now also flat black who did a flat black paint on the valve covers upper and lower intake manifold just because it looks really good. We're taking off the running boards and we're also removing the front bumper to do a skid plate and then we're going to go ahead and remove the two electronic seats in the car the driver in the passenger seats are completely blown out as always with 97 limited's they're always shot out when the leather seats come with them. Either way this is going to be a great project I'm heading out tomorrow to go find myself to the new heads for this thing since one of them was cracked when I took it off. I plan on doing a full transformation with this vehicle from stock unit to fully customized off-road special going to be a blast I have a couple of pictures in my old 4Runners that I found to motivate me to build this one into exactly what I want. I have a 97 that I traded for a long travel Ford Ranger about 2 years ago that was an amazing truck but now that I just sold that one I had to get back into the 4Runner Club. Me and my wife like to go camping a lot and we like to use the vehicle as our camp shelter in case that it gets too windy or something like that it's always a really good place to have to retreat to when you're in the desert in the wind starts blowing we like to go to Ocotillo and stuff like that mammoth and we want to try and find some other people to go out on the trails with round here in the San Diego area.

Looks like the start of a good build. Hard to beat for $280. For that price you could just throw a used motor in it and still be ahead of the game. I go down to Ocotillo/Anza-Borrego area during the winter. Last went down there Memorial Day weekend before it got too hot. Good luck with the repairs.

Yes sir thank you. Heading out to junk yard in AM to snag more parts for her. We have some work but we're getting it done. Yanked those ugly running boards and removing the badges for painting or reappropriation.

Got my Intake painted too. Love it. Cleaned and checked all injectors with meter and inspected all seal conditions. Buying new injection seals as well. Super easy to check resistance on the injector.

Lastly I finally learned what goes where wire wise lol, for the radio. It's a decent little unit so we give her a chance. Gonna stuff a PA and/Or programmable HAM radio. Either way I gotta have em both.

sweet keep posting progress, starting on my daughters 99 limited. our mechanical is good but a lot of cosmetic and body issues (including locks and seats)

Got really nice heads from local yard, and scored all the missing clips and brackets. Scored new coils wires plugs and more. To much to list. Here's some pics. Next is the suspension once I'm done installing new heads.

I searched for 3 hours found her hidden in the back corner of a large lot. I had the pleasure of being first to get at her lol. Know how I know so? Because the center console lid was still there. It's so hard to find a 3.4 thst hasn't been yanked already or heads already gone. I was in disbelief and wasted no time. It went from untouched to head bolts exposed in a little less than 60 mins. I was beating guys back with a stick while removing the heads. Dudes were coming out the woodwork to get it. I had 4 people ask me if I wanted this or that I said I want it all with a look thst could kill. Lol. O what a day.

Going down to install new parts now, then the rest in the am. Been a long day... but a successful one to say the least. Got my eye on a large touch screen Kenwood down there I want too lol

I was lucky enough to find the donor 4runner with the keys in the ignition. I swiftly removed all the door cylinders and ignition for myself. Thanks to the previous owner the key only works in one door and is so rounded out I can remove it while I start position. I made quick work of collecting as many panel and door fasteners as I could to replace the ones that are broken. Cheap trick being a tackle box and full it up with all the small hard to find stuff. It will save you a boat load of cash. Yanking the seats and slapping the junk yard ones in.

Re-Installed replacement center console and hardware.
Installed rear wiper arm and blade with bumper. Installed panel mounting tabs in one door. It sounds so much better, nice and tight. Installed the rear passenger cup holder with a new one, ditched the broken old one. Got the rear wing hidden but they wanted $10 bucks for it I'm like wow should be $3.

So now all we got to do is buy:

Head gaskets
Head Bolts
Slap engine back together
Make sure it runs lol
Replace muffler
Smog IT, and then fine tune the rest of the truck slowly
Replace seats
Address body and paint imperfections.

Results:

Driver's side cylinder cracked between both intake and exhaust valves.

Both head gaskets we're toast and showed obvious signs of failure.

We went ahead and started cleaning the block, removing old material and corrosion. She looked bad, but no major rust and no piston or sleeve damage.

She's worn but will still work once she's churched up a bit.

We're almost there. Got new plugs, snagged some new OEM Coil Packs, and new wires. Got half the gaskets together. So anxious to get her back togwther. I have camping withdrawals it's been to long!

Ok guys so I need your opinions on best ways to clean out the crap that builds up in the coolant passages and stuff. Had a few pieces fall in just thinking block flush once assembled to help then drive a hundred or so miles do it again unitl she's clean. Doing a triple oils change one every 100 miles driven., To ensure we get as much crap out if there as possible.

How do you do it after a new headgasket install?

We're back at it today with the cleaning/inspection of the block and cylinder sleeves condition.

We have some small bits of corrosion develope since she sat for 4 months, before I bought her. Nothing major, but this is sensitive stuff here. Grabbed some smooth lint free cloth rags to wipe and wipe and wipe and wipe vacuum wipe vacuum for a hour before anything is moved.

Trying to keep debris from being trapped between wall and piston/rings. Sure fire way to ruin a job well done if you accidentally turned the motor you could easily lodge stuff in there.

Slapping new locks in check the old one vs new one. The new one I found in the ignition at junk yard. I kindly proceeded to remove them all lol.

By the time I'm done today she's gonna be ready to go back together and run. Be a few hours I will post pics of the progress. Here's a photo of what I'm using to clean with.

AutoZone carb cleaner
AutoZone premium cloth rags
AutoZone Brake Fluid

Heard the brake fluid worked well so I am going try it. Here we go!

Went ahead today and started the process of getting the deck all cleaned up. We had some really bad gaskets on this thing last and it was a ***** to remove all the old material.

We used a carbon gasket scraper, some cleaning products but never any scotch Brite pads or anything else on the cylinder walls.

We went ahead and used a vacuum to rice a of the large debris, and just wiped and wiped. Spray, clean wipe repeat.

We haven't turned the motor with a wrench yet to get to all the walls yet because there are some small debris caught in there I want to get out.

During the process we could see the passages for the coolant and oil had some build up blocking the passages almost entirely in a free spots. While attempting to remove the pieces in there they fell into the coolant and I am wondering.

What's the best way to clean the coolant passages and all.of the crap that fell in there? Just flush the crap out of it when I assemble her? Same with oil?

Need some insight from you all on the best way to try and remove all that old stuff.

I planned on doing 3 coolant flushes once assembled. Was gonna get her all topped off with water not coolant since I was gonna toss it anyways

Here are some close-ups of the cylinder (s) and pistons. The deck looks good. Checked her for Warpage and seems like she's within spec.

Really excited to see that there wasn't any damage in the pistons or cylinder walls. The #5 cylinder does have some damage on the top of the piston from the headgasket material coming loose and getting a little best up.

Remember, we're just getting this badboy back together long enough to get a JDM motor. So even with these little issues she should still perform very well.

We looked at the heads they were removed and found that 4 of 6 cylinders had failed gasket and the rest had very very small cracks between the intake and exhaust valves. So she was not just overheated but repeated overheated. So we trashed the heads that came off her.

New ones going on this weekend, just need some tips on how to clean the coolant in the block because crap fell into the cooling passages during deck cleaning. Anybody have any tips on getting as much of this as I can out?

Went ahead and also yanked the running boards off, along with all the old broken and rattling body panel clips.

We slapped the new ignition in there and threw away the running boards since they were slightly damaged. We also went ahead and slapped on the new rear window wiper arm and assembly. Went on seemlessly.

Then to top it all off, we went ahead and replaced the missing roof rack end pieces with new ones from donor car. Icing on the cake will be the addition of the new seats I have waiting for me as well in Point Loma. Won't be adding those unitl motor is back together.

Hello instant lift! Lol

Heading back out today to get the rest of the parts from the junkyard that I hid in other vehicles until I could get the cash needed to make it happen.

Really praying that they are still there it's been a whole week, and I have the feeling I need to get my ass down there to get the rest. Nervous....ugh!

We went and got one of the two heads cleaned up and almost ready for install. We lucked out and got one of the two hidden heads at the junk yard I stashed last week. Right where I left her nice and safe.

Brought home all the bearings and driver's side head cylinder, and cams. Started cleaning her up and getting her ready for warpage test and all here shortly. These heads we're from a 97 Limited that was wrecked 500 miles after new head purchases, I know because I have receipts for them I found in the glove box. Been very careful with these beautiful baby's...I'm almost done!

Just needs to get these gaskets and clean, clean clean!

Take the heads to a machine shop and have them cleaned. It's not very expensive for them to boil them and clean them up. For a little more you can get a valve job done with new seals, valves cleaned up etc. For the block, get a wet/dry shop vacuum and have at it. If you put a lot of crap down any of the oil passages I would consider removing the engine, tearing it down and getting the block steam cleaned like the heads. It means all new gaskets and bearings but if your cylinders and pistons are still good then it still shouldn't be too expensive. You are still miles ahead since the whole truck was so cheap.

Went and slapped her back together, with all new gaskets from top of bottom including injectors. She's all clean and ready to run.

Replaced all hoses, vacuum lines, fluids.

Battery took a charge, LEDS installed on all corners. He's waiting for a new tensioner pulley, and fluids. She's almost there!
