97 ltd replacement keyless remote programming

hey there
new (to me) 97 4Runner ltd.
of course it came without remotes.
we bought one from a dealer.

i've tried the 5 cycle lock / unlock thing to death. no response from vehicle.
there is no remote box under either front seat.
what else can I do to get this thing working?

What kind of alarm system is it?

I just recently lost my remote for a Chapman system (Code Alarm remote) and had to reprogram a new one I purchased. My remote has two buttons... one ARM and one DISARM.

The way to program it is:

1 - open and leave the drivers side door open

2 - turn the ignition to the on position without turning on the car

3 - press and hold the valet button for 20 seconds. if it's the same sytem, it will cycle through the horn and ones 3 times. KEEP THE BUTTON PRESSED DOWN.

4 - press the ARM button on your remote. if it syncs, you will hear your alarm chirp once.
