97 manual to 97 auto

Bump
anyone have expierece with just using the same year manual ecu with same year auto harness. ?

I can't tell you definitively whether that's an option, without comparing the wiring schematics for both.

So, my advice would be to compare the wiring schematics to see if that's a viable option.

So I need to look at wiring diagram of auto 97and wiring diagram of manual 97? And compare them ?

Can any one confirm if I could get away with just a 97 5VZ 4X4 MANUAL ECU and use my existing harness which is plugged into the auto ecu. I read that I could get away with just clipping few wires and use my harness with the manual ecu and have no codes

That's a negative ghost rider. You'd have to completely repin it.

Your best and by far easiest option is to simply live with the check engine light on. To swap the ecu and associated wiring, you either have to repin and practically build a custom harness like cob did. Or you can just tap a few wires on your already installed auto wiring harness/ecu and wire them into the manual switches. Its Like 6 wires if your not switching transfer case types. Take a look at my swap thread and pm me if you have any specific questions.

Im aiming for no CEL !! I don't mind if it's hardness. Question is it possible ? I can get manual same year ecu for $75. To re pin my harness , I need to find 97 manual harness diagram and compare it to 97 auto harness ? How hard can it be to repin it on same year ? Reason why I don't want CEL due to inspection. Exactly what is involved in re pin ? And yes, same transfer case. J shift.

I'm guessing to re pin The auto harness you need the manual harness connectors that go into the manual ecu ?

Maybe, maybe not. They might use the same connectors and just repurpose a few of the pins. Guessing is a waste of time. The EWD's show the pin-outs. If I had them, I'd tell you. Get them. You can't do this without them. If you do need a connector, then it's the junkyard or buy the connector housing from Toyota. You can then transplant the pin/wires into the housing.

Although if zgensler31 says it's that big of a bear he's probably right. He's done one.

EWD is electric wiring diagram ?... You can get the manual connector housing that go into the manual ecu from the dealer ship ? I found a 97 5vzfe 4x4 Tacoma auto EWD and 97 5vzfe 4x4 Tacoma Manual EWD. I'll post it later after work.

What if I just swapped the harness ? Harness of 97 manual 4runner ? Then I should be good ?! Considering that it's probably easier then to re pin.

Yeah, you can. The dealer, at least my idiot dealer, won't look up the p/n for you, but the EWD has a chapter called "Part Number of Connectors" that gives it to you. Then the idiot was happy to order it. I only needed one so shipping made the stealer cheaper. Many of the secrets of connectors are in this invaluable thread:

Repair a Toyota Wire Harness - TTORA Forum

The manual he refers to got taken down butyou can download it here: http://wilbo666.pbworks.com/w/file/48443657/Wire%20Harness%20Repair%20Manual%20(RM1022E).pdf

The second question is again something the EWD can answer. Beside the harness, there are also a few truckside plugs on the ECU that don't go to the engine. That can complicate things, when switching ECU's, even if you switch the harness, too, if those plugs are different.

To eliminate surprises, I would suggest finding the EWD for the specific vehicles involved. Tacoma EWD's may or may not be applicable.

The FSM, ALLDATA, or Mitchell 1 are all potential sources for the info you need. For EWD's, I would probably lean towards Mitchell 1.

I'm aiming towards getting 97 manual ecu with harness, then compare everything and both 97 manual and 97 auto EWD and then use the connectors of the manual harness that goes into the manual ecu and repin my auto harness. I will probably end up having some wires left over which might be useless. In theory it should work without throwing any codes. I'm gonna pay for the Mitchell 1 or whatever and get the ewd. Can I post the ewd afterwords here to have more people look at it unless I miss something ?by the way, thank you all for your patience and time.

Alright. To clear some stuff up for you.

1. As far as I can remember, the plugs are the same.

2. Having a matching harness and ecu is ideal, but will still need some customizing and likely repining.
-the clutch pedal switches are part of the interior wiring harness, not the engine, and that is awhole nother battle to find compatibility and switching it out.
- the interior harness also plugs into the ecu, and theses two plugs would likely need repinned as well.

Does your inspection actually hook the truck up or just visually check for cel? Just curious cuz its just a bulb.

I may have a 97 ecu...I really cant remember what year my donor truck was atm.

NJ will fail you instantly if the bulb is lit. But if it's not, they hook up and scan, and any DTC or any incomplete will still fail you. Rat bastids. What is this? stinkin' Kalifornia?
