97 rear drum issues

hey guys my 97 4 runner is having a rear drum issue, it seams to be over adjusting when i use the ebrake regularly causing the drums to "drag" all new hardware and shoes cant figure this out, just wanna see if anyone else has had this issue, i hate drums.:hurt:

I had the same problem, and even after finally taking my 4runner to a mechanic, it still wasn't fixed. Final solution? The stupid rear brake drum shoes. I had purchased the NAPA Gold brake shoes, and upon closer inspection (comparing them side-by-side to the OEM shoes), the bend of the shoes left the ends of the pad dragging on the inside of the drum.

I ended up taking back the NAPA's and got some Waggoner Premiums from Pep Boys, then BAM, problem solved. It was an expensive mistake, too. The mechanics charged me almost $300, and after taking it back twice, they still couldn't figure it out. After having my rear wheels off and back on AT LEAST a good 8 times or so, and to the mechanics 3 times, it was just the stupid brake shoes being poorly spec'd and manufactured. Bastards...

If I could do it all over again, I'd just pay up and buy the OEM shoes. They're expensive, but they're quality, and it would certainly come without ridiculous and preventable issues.

im definitely going to do this. ive put on shitty duralast and shitty oreillys shoes and nothing but problems. once again thank you

I have Napa shoes that are working fine, with Brembo drums. I too ran into issues when I initially put everything together with dragging. After making sure my e-brake adjusters weren't frozen and lubed, I backed out the star adjusters way out. I had them too tight initially because I had read about wanting a bit of drag even when the e brake is disengaged (rule of thumb on old cars with drum brakes). If your adjusters are working, the brakes will self adjust to the right level, so it is better to default to an under-tightened shoes and then work the e-brake a bunch and let the auto-adjusters do their thing.
