97 sr5 Air compressor noise

Hi all,

Hopefully, someone can steer me in the right direction. I did a few searches, but searching for clutches brings back a massive amount of manual clutch results and not many air compressor results. I've got a noise coming from the air compressor. I know very little in this arena. I'm not running the AC at all at this point since "Winter is here". If it's still making noise what would be more likely the clutch, pulley, or the actual AC motor itself? It doesn't seem like I can replace just the pulley as I haven't found that part for purchase. ANy help would be appreciated.

The a/c compressor engages when your climate control is in either of the defrost modes. This can be disabled by disconnecting the plug with the blue wires on the back of the climate control console. Disassembly of the dash is necessary to achieve this mod.

Often compressor pulley bearing noise occurs when the compressor clutch is not engaged, as the belt is turning the pulley but not the compressor itself. The bearing now spins, whereas when the a/c is engaged the bearing is not spinning.

Edit: your search results will be better if you refer to the assembly as a/c compressor clutch, not just compressor or clutch.

you can rebuild the AC clutch/stator

if your not planning on using the AC for the winter? my advise would be just to cut the AC belt. yes you will have to get a new AC belt but they are only like $20. if you don't feel like fixing it until spring cutting the belt is lazy but easy.

the best course of action is really to replace the AC compressor and at the very least the A/C drier assembly.

I cut the belt for now. Problem solved. Thanks for the advice!!
