I've had some issues with starting and driving my 4Runner, where it would run rough and finally snap out of it after just a few minutes. I changed my plugs (single diode) and it didn't seem to help anything. As it got worse, I planned on changing the wires to see if that helped. Unfortunately, before I did, I went a little bit too fast through two deep areas of rain during a big rain storm here in MD several months back, and ended up bogging out (no power) which in turn lead me to getting it flat bedded back home.
Previous to that, I had a CELight which pointed to the front O2 sensor. I changed it, but the light came back. I didn't see any other error codes when I checked it originally (auto store).
I changed the wires (NGK) and it didn't help. I got a letter from USAA (who covered towing) which said I had I think 3 years to finish my claim. So I called them to see if they would look at it to see if there was somehow any type of damage from the water. They covered the second tow, and went to look at it. The mechanic, who I've used quite a bit and trusted, pointed to the MAF, and USAA told me they couldn't help me.
The mechanic cleaned up the MAF and agreed to let me come get it to drive it around. I drove it up the street as they were closing. The problem was still there. I drifted it back down the hill, and put it back.
I called them the next day, and told them the deal. I picked up a MAF (rebuilt) and slapped it on after hours there, but there was no change.
They cleaned it up again, and also checked the hoses and gas flow, stating it was now running good. He said they drove it all over the place, and it seemed fine. So I came and got it that night. Same thing again. He did say that he has seen many of the rebuilt ones bad out of the box. Cost a little over $200 for nothing.
After it sat there for over a week, I got it and drifted it down the hill (puttering along) and took it to another shop that several of my friends highly recommended. They looked it over and cleaned up the OLD MAF (again), put it back on, and said that it was now running fine. So, I paid them $100 and drove it home. The next day, same issue returned.
I took the new MAF back, and went and purchased a different one from a store far away from the first. Put it on at home, and still had the problem. Put the old one back on and returned the 2nd rebuilt one. Air filter is good.
Today I changed my plugs to the NGKs with the dual tips (couldn't hurt). No change. I can tell you that the 2nd shop told me the error code this time was for the rear O2 sensor. I bought one, and I am about to put it on. My question is could that be the cause of the engine starting up, the vehicle shaking, and then stalling after sitting? It does it fairly quickly when I put it in gear. When I drive it down the street, it bogs when I step on it, and it even gives a slight popping backfire/spitting sound when I do. But it lags so bad, I have to pull off the street and put it in neutral to rev it a bit before trying to add a few more feet to my trip. It was low on gas, so I just poured a new can in from a different station. Doesn't seem like bad gas.
I know there are several different threads on this type of thing, but I wanted to post my exact problems to see if anyone had any thoughts. I gotta pay for the next tow, and I have worked on cars for years. I just am a bit stumped on this one.
Thanks,
Liam
