97 SR5 Transmission Swap

Just bought a 97 SR5 to replace a similar SR5 that was totaled (by my twin). I'm swapping the automatic out to put my manual back in, just wondering how much of a nightmare I'm looking at with wiring. I believe all I would need is the clutch start cancel and transmission wiring, the rest should all be the same. If anyone has an input let me know! New to T4R but not new to Yota!

You'll have a check engine light on. As the auto ecu will be searching for auto tranny. You can trick the auto ecu but you will have a CEL CODE. If you want a clean swap you need a manual ecu for same motor and same year truck. The problem with this is, the 97 auto harness has different pins vs 97 manual harness. So the auto ecu and manual ecu have different plugs. Now if you want a clean clean manual swap. Get a 97 manual ecu. And repin your auto harness to the manual connectors. And it should work fine without any codes.

Here's a thread I posted from doing my research. Because I to have 97 auto and after winter will swap manual.

I made my own Repin chart. For 97 I can share it but its not my responsibility. I've talker and shared my Repin chart with the guy whom I'm shared this info and he confirmed that my chart looked correct.

The info i shared should be sticky

You just made my month brother! Much thanks

You need to get a 97 5vzfe 4x4 assuming that's what you have ENGINE COMPUTER, and those connectors for that ecu. Then download the 97 4runner 5vzfe 4x4 wiring diagrams. And make a conversion chart. It took me about 5 good hours to make one. I have everything saved on a USB for a 97. So if you want to give me your email. I could share my chart and that might save you time and headache. But I am not responsible for anything. As I'd recommend rechecking everything TWICE.

I got my manual 97 ecu from car-parts.com but lucky me I actually got the whole engine harness and the ecu for $250. The engine harness is not cut either. I see the ecu got for about $70-$109 so you just need to make a lot of phone calls.

I've got it all, two identical 97 SR5's. One with auto, one with manual. I will be purchasing the plugs for the ECU and dash, and probably the tranny? That way I can maintain the full engine wiring harness for the next guy that wants a cheap one, new connectors in the fresh gal, and hopefully a smooth runner! Added bonus of the RR diff lock as well has me pretty stoked. I will PM you with my email, thanks!

If you have 2 97 sr5 4x4 4runners the you have all you need to do the swap. Just swap all needed harnesses and parts from the totalled manual to the good auto 4runner. A new clutch is a very good idea while you have the trans out.

Its probably easier to repin the harness then to swap both harness.

No worries, I've got wiring diagrams to study and plenty of other tweaks to twerk. You're swap went from 97 to 97? SR5 to SR5? When this is all said and done I'll be in Allentown by early summer, so you'll be able to check out my work when we wheel
