Not sure how the alternator factors into it? It tests fine and all electric loads are perfect. Do you mean its loose on its mounts?

Alternators whine after time, mine tested perfect aswell, but with 140k+ at the time it had, I figured it would be maybe a good reason to change, plus the whine was annoying the heck out of me.

Thanks for reply, but this isn't alternator whine. Its a low rumble/vibration.

Worth a try, I've never done that before. Couldn't find anything in a search for pulley maintenance/lube, anyone have a DIY or any advice? Cheers.

I thought they had sealed bearings .....

I've never heard of anyone "lubing up their pulley's"

i thought the thread was about vibes and not whine? no way a sticky alt pulley would cause vibrations, it might get loud but should never cause a vibe that's noticeable unless the thing was about to shoot off into oblivion or something, you'd be able to see it turning out of round if it was that bad....

I'm going to take a video and post it.

Took it to another garage, these guys couldn't figure it out either. Took the steth. out and everything and couldn't hear anything. It was good to see it under the lift with the wheels lifted and to see and hear drive shaft working. All mounts are tight, its just at warm idle in DRIVE when the rumble starts.

I agree that the vibration / rumble at idle is caused by the low rpm. When fully warmed up, my 4runner idle between 600-610 rpm. I used the Ultragauge to measure this. I have a persistent rumble when in Drive and Stopped. But goes away immediately when I put in Neutral and it shoots up to 700 rpm. Although, if i wait long enough, the engine goes back down towards 600 rpm.

Took it to a local shop that specializes in Toyota vehicles. He said the 4runner is running fine, and that the idle speed is controlled by the ECM, and it's doing what its suppose to be doing. He doesn't recommend physically manipulating the idle speed, and the next course of action would be to change the motor mounts.

Any recommendations on what to do, short of getting new motor mounts? It'll be a costly job to change them. How can I increase the idle speed? Maybe I can increase it slightly for a week to test whether or not the rough idle will go away. Thoughts?
