97 T4R engine instantly floods

I bought a 97 4runner with a blown engine, I replaced the engine with one from a 01 4runner. I was told that engines from 96 to 02 are the same. The problem I am having is it instantly floods out, so bad that gas is dripping out where the exhaust meets before the converter. It doesn't even give me a courtesy pop, no spits or sputters. It has spark and compression. The only way I can get it to try to start is to pinch off the fuel line and when it does try and start it runs real rough. I've changed almost all the sensors including the injectors with the fuel rail and pressure regulator, only ones I haven't changed are the knock and temp sensors. If anybody has any ideas of what to do next let me know, I'm at a loss.

I know the older 4runners use a cable for throttle and the newer ones used an electronic. Did you swap the throttle body to your old one so it will work with the standard cable throttle. I think some swap the entire intake manifold with everything intact to the newer motor.

Make sure the wiring harness plugs are securely seated into the ecu slots.

Ours did the same thing once, stumped us all,for days. Then my son push on one of the harness plugs I had removed, it looked like it was seated right, apparently not. It clicked and started right up.

Worth a try..... Hope,it helps

I've checked the plugs on the ecu a couple times. Checked the whole wiring for bad connections. I've swapped out the fuel regulator from the original engine and still the same thing.

Are spark plugs new?

Will it start if you give it some throttle?

If you pull the fuel pump relay will it start with starting fluid? And stay running with little shots of it?

Spark plugs are new, won't start with any amount of throttle. Tried starting fluid and nothing. Where is the fuel pump relay? I've been looking and can't find a fuse or relay for it.

Whats engine timing look like? everything at top/center? the belt could have slipped a couple notches when tension-ed, the same type of symptoms happened to me.

I'd say hold out for a banjo fitting to put on the rail to test pressure.

I saw a fuel pump fail once pumping at 75psi but the car only needed ~38 or so.

Pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and see if gas comes out.

I'd try these two steps first if you can. I have seen a pump fail "high" before, they can push out a lot more pressure than what the vehicle needs.

More pressure means more flow, more flow means more fluid is pushed out in the time that injector pintle is open vs. at normal operating pressure.

The compression is great. Gonna check the o2 sensors this weekend. If the 02 sensors are reading zero volts, would that make it just dump fuel in it?

No. It starts in open loop with the sensors totally out of the picture for the first few minutes of engine run.

All it cares about at cold startup is MAS, TPS, ECT and cam and crank sensors. 20 dollars buys you a fuel pressure tester from harbor freight. It goes on the test port on the fuel rail. Then you know where to look next.

Alright I'll give that a try. Does anybody know if the part the crank sensor picks up on is the same for a 01 engine?
