98 3rd Gen Headlight Reminder?

Did some searching to try and figure out the headlight situation on my 98 Limited. Does anyone know when Toyota introduced the auto shut off headlights? Also, should my truck have a buzzer to remind me that the lights are on?

Thanks in advance

not sure about the auto shut off.

for the buzzer, put your key in the ignition (dont start it), turn lights on, open door.

If mine is to have a buzzer noise, it doesn't. So i can assume that is the issue. I will sort out why the buzzer doesn't buzz. I saw a reference for the location to be behind the panel under the steering column. The one with the 4 10mm bolts. perhaps i will start there.

I don’t they have a buzzer at all.

My 99 doesn’t.

It does ‘ding ding ding’ at me with the keys in the ignition.

Then again, I have the ‘open door, lights shut off’ option.

My '98 Limited gives an audible alarm when I leave my headlights on and open the driver's door. It's that time of year when I leave for work in the dark and arrive after sunrise, so I've been forgetting a lot lately!

Interesting... my '99 Limited doesn't do any sort of buzzer/dinger warning, it just seems to turn off the headlights if I forget to do it. Is that some sort of 'setting' that a PO made or is that just the way it works from the factory?

The auto shut off with an actual proximity sensor wasn't until 2003 I believe. But in 99-02 4runners if you leave the head lights in the on position and turn the truck off the lights will turn off with the truck.

Now for the buzzer, all the years of the 3rd gen came with a "buzzer" of some sorts it's more of a constant high pitch chime though. It should ding when you put the key in the ignition with the drivers door open and it should if you leave the headlights on and remove the key on 96-98 lights it should sound, it's honestly super annoying.

My '97 has this loud annoying [sine wave approx 600Hz] tone for headlights on + door open.
I love it. It's the only thing I want to be reminded of.
Immediately upon taking ownership of the vehicle, I disabled all other alarms, because I don't need to be reminded to use a seat belt.

Sounds like I should have reminder then. I am going to have to dig into it more. Need to find a schematic that includes the buzzer. Thank you all for the information.

**fixed**

Wanted to let any of you that may have this issue what fixed mine. Only one door actually turned on the courtesy lamp in the runner. So I went to the local salvage and got 5 door switches to replace mine assuming they were bad. They were in-fact bad and now all my doors turn on the lamp which is great! Now to the buzzer.... seems the buzzer is tied to the drives door switch. Once I replaced it the buzzer started buzzing when the lights were on and the truck was off.
