98' 4Runner 2.7 STD idle sound, Normal or Diagnostic?

Have you checked your skid plates to make sure they aren't loose?

No, not yet, I will do that this evening. It just seems odd that the noise starts after warmup/throttle, so i'm trying to rule out timing chain/valve issue (Hopefully).

Sounds like a diesel... bad wrist pins will make a gas engine rattle like a diesel.

Not saying it is ... but it's on the list of possibilities. Can you isolate the sound with a stethoscope or a long screwdriver pressed to your ear?
Perhaps cam timing gears?
It goes away when under load so I'm guessing backlash of some sort

It seems to be near the front/Right of the valve cover, but i'll try to localize it after making sure the skid plate is secure. A timing chain sound would occur AFTER the throttle is released correct?

My 3rz has a hot idle tick - quite different than yours though. (undiagnosed as of yet)

While searching around I found a video that sounds a lot like yours over at a Tacoma forum. Sadly that thread was never concluded but maybe it'll be helpful.

Wow, that's exactly the same Sound, i'll have to keep that as a reference. I just need to find a respectable place to take my runner in to get a lookover because I don't have the measureing tools/experience to take the valve cover off and diagnose myself. I just don't want to take my car into a shop that does something to make it worse/ thousands at the dealership. Toyota wanted $320 Just to take the valve cover off when I went in last let alone measure/touch anything.
