At first the check engine light was blinking off and on for a couple of weeks. Then two weeks ago it stayed on permanently. Replacing all spark plugs, wires and the one coil pack after finding out that it was misfiring on cyl 2 and 5 did not resolve the problem. I also noticed the oil was 2 qts low and I recently had the oil changed less then 1k miles ago. It is now with my mechanic who is having a hard time diagnosing the problem. He

For what it's worth, I was having the same hesitation/misfiring problem with the same symptoms with my 98 4Runner with 113K... jerky acceleration, blinking CEL, on steady at times, would go off after a while and then repeat. I replaced plugs and wires with NGK plugs and wires, kept the old coil packs and cleaned the MAF with electrical contact cleaner. I've driven +150 miles and everything seems back to normal.
with an air/fuel mixture issue, you are not getting the right combination of air/fuel/spark, so after plugs and wires, check the air filter, MAF, O2 sensors and then fuel filter, fuel injectors. I have heard of people with the same symptoms replacing fuel injectors and that worked for them. I think there is a way to test the fuel injectors before replacing them to see if replacing would be beneficial.
my problem was the #5 fuel injector, it tested fine but one]ce it would hear up., we switched it wiht the #2 injector about 2 hours later i had the cel and a misfire in cyl 2 instead of 5 , even though it tested fine, they replaced it 1 week ago, it is running like a champ, lets just hope it stays this way

My 98 SR5 just started that(exactly what Goterps wrote, word to word) two weeks ago. At times it seems like it just wanna die
. I see people having issues with cyl. 2 & 5. How can i know the numbers on cyl and how can i check to see if they are misfiring? Is there a DIY way or do i have to take it to a Mechanic? Also I was thinking to get me NGK Spark Plugs and Wires, but i guess thats really not gonna help.
