98 4Runner One Click- wait then will start

The problem in the title started yesterday in my daily driver vehicle. I have a 98 4Runner Limited V6 with 261,000 miles; I bought it new. I suspect the starter is the problem and I plan to put in new contacts from a rebuild kit I can get from O'R's.

Should I suspect something else? I have never replaced or rebuilt the starter before.

Thinking installing rebuild kit will be better than replacing starter. Good or bad idea?

Thank You!

My vote to replace the starter contacts. My "97 rebuild and repair" thread has a picture of the exact position the starter needs to be in to remove it from the wheel well. It's not fun.

If you prefer videos over write-ups, here's a video tutorial you can follow to remove your starter, replace the contacts and plunger in the solenoid and reinstall it. Happy Wrenching!

What transmission do you have ?? If it starts to be a PITA you don't really need to remove it all the way.

Another vote for starter contacts.

Getting the top bolt out of the starter is a pain. Also, maneuvering it out is also a pain but it can be done.

Definitely use Tim's video he posted, it helped me a lot.
