98 4runner rear diff replacement?

Okay I have a 98 4runner w/ 241K miles. I have an increasingly loud whining from the rear of the vehicle and am told it is most likely my rear diff. I have replaced the one side rear axle bearings within the last 10K so i'm pretty sure that isn't the culprit. If I elect to purchase an after market complete rear diff is this something the average person can install with the proper tools??? The vehicle is equipped with locking rear diff. From reading I understand the brake lines and both axels need to be pulled to remove the diff. Other than that are there other problems or issues with replacement? Do you need to ensure the spline count match the after market diff, etc??? Thanks...
