98 4x4 4.11 rear end excessive failures

specs- 1998 4runner, 3.4l v6 jdm engine swap because of water damage.

car has 225550 miles. new u-joints 10k ago.


about 10k miles ago, I broke a few teeth off my rear axle's pinion while racing a civic .

I took it apart and bought some 4.11 gears, seals, and bearings from 4wheel parts here locally.

omg, never buy gears from them EVER
they are called "quality" gears
the splines that were cut for the pinion flange weren't even cut evenly. and they weren't cut long enough, along with the total length of the pinion.

overall trash.

so I bought some yukon gears from a place locally called randy's ring and pinion.

perfect fit.

had a friend that does nothing but gears for a living install them because I had no idea what i was doing.

heel, and toe were aligned perfectly.

installed it, tightened it down, greased u-joints and went on my merry way.

well, just yesterday I was delivering some packages downtown for a friend. While traveling over some railroad tracks I herd a horrible crunch then click-click-click-click after that happened. I immediately knew it was the diff.

so I pulled the driveshaft out and put it in 4x4 to limp it home.


got home, pulled the 3rd member and what do you know the pinion has 2 teeth gone just like the last one.

while thinking back 10k miles to all the driving I had done in those 5 months, there was no racing, no offroading "only jumping curbs to avoid traffic" only granny driving to avoid any un-necessary fixes.


is my diff cursed? what would cause this.

I think I'd get a new carrier. I wonder if its still set up like it was when you put it in. It's like something moved (maybe one of the ring adjusters)and then snapped back. I had this same problem with a "55 chevy W/4.56's. I sold the car and the new owner put in a new carrier and it solved it.

sounds like a plan,
wonder how much itll cost.

but then I run into the problem of getting one form a junk yard. a majority of 4runner aren't 4x4 with a standard tranny.



how can I tell the gears are 4.11 "dont wanna bind up the xfer case" =(

First find out if the busted one is set up right still. To find out if its 4.11 just count teeth on your old ring and make sure the new one has same number.

i was wondering if it weas the same 2 that was grinding?
and are u pos. u removes all the bitts and pices b4 u or that friend of yours put it all abck together.... i have had problems with that same thing while racing 4wheelers.... truly sucks!

yeah, I power washed the axle housing and all.

I think I used low quality oil, this time im paying like 7$ a quart for royal purple.

Have you noticed any wheel hop or rear end wrap-up? Do you have huge meats in the rear? Maybe its too much traction. Are your axle gears (Differentials) chipped or anything?

nope, ive got the stock 265/75/16 michelin ltx m/s

and no, the gears were brand new, but now trashed


I think I used crappy gear oil, and my gears got too hot while pulling something and they tempered. and when I put a lod on em, they blew.

did you even break them in at all?

for one, if you have 4.10s stock, go to car-part.com

search for a rear carrier (which will end up being a 3rd member anyways from the junk yard) and go buy a rear third and swap. dont waste getting gears again inless you plan on going to 4.56 or 4.88s
