98 limited bump stops

Hi,

I am in process of changing my rear suspension.

I see that my bump stops in the rear is only about 2" above the axle. These are external bump stops, not inside the coil. There is actually no bump stops inside of the coil on my runner.

Which means, 2" of travel and it will hit axle, is that normal? only 2" of travel?

I am on stock rear springs, so although it sits level when unloaded, even with minor load, it starts to sag, like 2 people sitting in the rear, or few stuff in the trunk, this will even further reduce the bump stop distance in normal riding..

Wonder if this is all across or I need to do something?

Coils start to sag over time. Are you talking about your old, stock coils from 1998? If yes, don't worry about it, just change the coils.

I gained about 1.5" lift back by replacing the rear coils with stock-height replacements.

Do some 3rd gens not have cone bump stops? He mentions them missing which makes me think the coils may have been swapped?

He does say the rig sits level, usually with sag the rear is a little lower. I believe when my 1996 was stock it only had a few inches till the stops touched but cant remember that far back.

He mentioned the bump stops are there, just not inside the coil. Mine are also inside the coil but in his sig it shows he has a Canadian market 4Runner. I've never seen one before but I suppose it's possible there are variations between the US and Candanian models. Well, I should say they ARE different, but not sure all the differences.

The 1996-98 4Runner did not come with the ones inside the coil. That was a 99+ addition. There was a recall to add them to the older ones, but many people didn't get it done (like mine)

Not true, my 96 has the cones and from what I researched all should have the cones making me feel his coils have been swapped at one point. This would also cause it to lower the rear end a bit since they are pretty thick and act as a small spacer.

Interesting... I didn't know of any recalls. Mine is the same way, is there a TB still out there outlined what exactly was recalled?

According to my vin when purchased I had zero recalls done. SS sells a rear coil air bag kit and he requires you to use the stock bump stop cone to install them. What does the rear coil use as an isolator? Never heard of this. Do you have link to back up this info? I would like to know if my rig had the coil recall. Thanks.

my 97 has the cones inside the rear springs, also no record of having that specific recall done on it. Who knows....

I see what parts are ordered and swapped but dont see it saying that the early models did not have cone stops.

Here's the link to the rear suspension recall. It does not specifically state what exactly would be replaced or added. My 97 did have isolator cones when I did my lift. When I check my VIN against the Toyota database it says my vehicle has not had any of the recalls performed.

So who knows. lol

So what exactly should be the distance between the bump stops and the axle? Like OP Said I have 1-2 inches, what is the distance on fresh new springs? I have DOA shocks or bad springs.

My 96 Canadian 4runner did NOT come with any bump stops in the coils. I have a junk yard set in it now.

how do you know that you have a canadian model? Mine doesnt seem to have the cone stops either and im curious if I have a canadian model as well, or if they were maybe removed at some point
