'98 Limited multi-mode CDL button location?

Still looking for another 3rd Gen, I saw today that had a really solid body and frame, just everything else is completely worn/leaking/in desperate need of repairs. The '01 that I just sold had the multi mode t-case and the lock button was on the dash, right where the e-locker button would be in a '96-'2000 if so equipped.

On this '98, there's an aftermarket security light LED in that dash location. I couldn't see a button anywhere else in the dash or console. Is there a CDL button on a '98 Limited? I've searched the webz without finding a solid answer.

CDL didn't start until 99 or 01. The 98 won't have it and I'm sure of that.

Agreed. The CDL didn’t exist until 1999. Everything before had a simple part-time always locked transfer case.

Thanks. I'm trying to find the thread on Yotatech that explains each 4wd system in these 3rd gens, I've lost the bookmark. So, is it safe to assume that if there's no CDL, then this t-case doesn't have a center diff for an AWD setting?

Correct, no AWD mode until 99

Thanks guys. The t-case lever threw me off, it's a 4H-N-4L pattern with the button on the side. So it sounds like 4H is really 2WD until you hit the button, then it's 4H locked instead of the AWD that my '01 had. Sheeze, you'd think that toyota would have just kept the darn part time t-case in there, it would have made more sense.

For 1999-2000 Limiteds, the multi-mode transfer lever is the J-type. However, the shift points are marked as H2-H4, H4L, N, and L4L. "L" is a subscript and means center diff locked. So when you shift the lever to either H4L or L4L, the center diff is automatically locked, unlike in the 2001-2002 I-shift type wherein there is a separate switch for the center diff

The 4WD button in the lever is for AWD while the transfer lever in H2-H4.
