98 transmission problems

I have a 98 4X4 SR5 3.4 with and A.T. (131k miles) that's driving me nuts. I think the tranny is shot but I want to get some opinions before I change it or have it rebuilt.

Here's what it's doing, when I start it and put it in drive it revs extremely high before it shifts into 2nd and when it's in 2nd it revs really high again but when it tries to shift into 3rd it just falls into neutral and won't go. I've tried the easy stuff first, checking the fluid, changing the fluid and adding additive but nothing has helped so far.

Is this tranny a loss or is there something else I should do before I get another one? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

So it does shift out of 2nd? But into Neutral instead of 3rd? Just wanting to clarify...

When it rev's really high in 1st and 2nd...are you getting the correct corresponding vehicle speed to match the engine speed? Or is it revving really high but not moving?

Yes, it is going into 2nd but not 3rd.
It's revving really high and not moving like it should. It's almost like the brakes are on but I know they aren't.

It's toasted and roasted my friend. I've never seen a transmission with those symptoms be saved without a complete rebuild.

Best bet is to find a good remanufactured OEM one, or just a low mileage used OEM and have your bad one replaced. Obviously, take it to a transmission shop first to get an opinion on it's condition as it sits right now.

Just throwing this out there, but could it be a shift solenoid? I remember 2 of my 3 went out but I had different symptoms, It would be really slow from 1st to 2nd gear, but when It hit 3rd It was fine. Not sure if that helps you.

I think I'm going to take it to a shop to have them look at it but I think it's toast too. Now I just need to figure out where to get another one when I do replace it.

Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it.

Definitely check shift solenoids first. $200 will get you 3 new ones...which is a lot cheaper than a new/used transmission.

Here's what happened... The low gear clutches $hit the bed causing the "high rev" in 1st+2nd. The trans shift points are determined by final "drive shaft" speed not engine RPM. Then the tiny silty fragments of worn clutches entered the valve body and clogged it up causing erroneous shifting. It will require a rebuild. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. This should cheer you up:girl: (always wanted to use that one)

You're like Willem Dafoe from Boondock Saints, only slightly less gay.

LOL.

You need to take it to a tranny shop, we can't really diagnose much of anything over the web on this issue. Look into changing the solenoids like mentioned earlier and make sure the shifter/linkage isn't just out of whack.
