99 4r idle to high

hey guys, i got a 99 4r with 112,000 miles, got in it this morning and drove about 2 miles and got out and i noticed it was idling at 1500 rpm and i know thats too high for sure, then after it got warmed up the idle went back down bout 10 mins later....really cold here this morning maybe that had something to do with it, anyone have any ideas??

It was probably the cold. The 4runners idle high to get the engine warm. In the future I would let your engine warm up for a least a few minutes before driving it. Not only will it drive better, but it will also be easier on the engine.

It's normal to idle at that speed for a minute or two since in the cold no car can idle at 700rpm or so.

Just let it run for a minute to get the oil going and then drive since it's better that the engine and tranny warm up together and the tranny won't warm til you are driving.

completely normal

both above posters have it exactly right.

This is quite normal.

In the mornings when I first start up the idle can pull me uphill on my gravel driveway in 1st gear.
