I'm looking around, and the trans shop is telling me that they are having trouble finding one.
it's got 4.10 gears, non lock, with abs, for 16" wheels...
will one from a 97 fit? obviously, I'd have to check the ratio and see if it's abs or not, but will it work if that matches? and where is the ratio stamped on the diff? I'd rather not have to pull it apart to count teeth...

THANKS!

For JUST a diff, it doesn't matter if it's ABS or not.

A diff from any 3rd Gen will work. As long as it has the same gear ratio.

I'd try to find an e-locker and do the retro fit while you were at it.

Anything out of a Taco or a 3rd Gen will work man. Like said about just get the same gearing and you are set. I would guess no more than 300 bucks for one. They are on CL often in the LA area and IE area.

Hope this helps you out.

No disrespect Blue, but you need to be careful with the Taco mentioning.

Taco's run a 8.4" rear diff. UNLESS, they came with the E-Locker. Then, they came with the 8".

ALL 4Runners came with the 8" rear diff. Weather they had the E-Locker or not.

Why do you think I did the 8.4" and leaf swap on mine. ;) The ARBs were out of a Taco.

Now, if it's the FRONT, then a diff would out of a Taco or a 4Runner will work.

(If I'm mistaken something when someone sayd Diff, please forgive me. When I hear diff, I think of the back. Clamshell makes me think of the front.)

You should be able to use any diff from a 79-95 toyota pickup, 84-02 4runner or 93-98 T100. However the diffs from the V6 trucks are stronger than ones from a 2wd. Now, if you used an older diff (pre-96). You may also have to swap drive flanges or get a triple drilled flange depending on if you have a 27 or 29 spline pinion.

I stand corrected on this. I was under the impression that they were the same. I was thinking the E-locker were all standard across the board which by your statement they are. I'm going to have to look into the 8.4"

Thanks for the info on this.

Your 8.4" from the Taco was out of a second gen Taco right? The first gen Taco's have the same front and rear as the 3rd gen 4Runners. Blue may not have mentioned specific years, but you don't either.

Nope he has a 1st gen. The 95.5-04 Tacoma's came with an 8.4" rear diff for all non-TRD models. TRD models got an 8" e-locker diff like our diffs.

Not completely true

2wd Tacos (2.4l) had 8" differentials. Although they didn't come in the 4:10 ratios though.

I thought that was the case, but I didn't want to search for the info since most people would be deterred by the ratio differences. Thanks for correcting me though.

Ok. So puttingin an 8.4" sounds doable. Will a trans shop do it?

???????

You, sir, are sadly mistaken. Doable, yes. worth the money to have someone else do it? F8CK NO.

read my build thread to see one way of putting an 8.4" in a 4Runner.

There's a shit ton of fabricating that needs to go into it.

You're going to pay out the ass.

You have a 4.10 ratio? I'll make some calls in the morning for you.....

Besides, I pride myself for being te only 3rdgn on the East Coast that has leafs and an 8.4......
