I have a 99 4cyl with 89k that has had a P0402 code for a few months. Was burning up EGR gaskets, but the new ones are holding. Was experiencing engine surges and reduced mpg. Also started to notice a gas smell outside the car after driving. Total loss of acceleration, very lazy and bogging down. Once it's up to speed on hwy it's better, but has a hard time maintaining speed on cruise. I've done spark plugs. Fuel filter, cleaned EGR, and MAF sensor. Mechanic said MAF, and cleaning it helped and engine light actually turned off... But 20 minutes later, it's back on and acceleration is gone again. Sick of wasting gas and money trying to figure this out... Anyone have anything similar or ideas?
