99+ console conversion

So as many people do with the earlier model 3rd gens, I want to do the 99+ console upgrade in mine. I've found a few of them but here's the issue. I have the rear heat option on my 4runner, and I can't seem to track down a local console from a car with rear heat. It wasn't the most popular option in the south because we don't exactly need it more than 3 days a year.

Anyway has anyone done the conversion and cut their own hole into the console, if that's even possible? I wouldn't imagine there to be any difference in the rest of the console, but if anyone has any info on it let me know!!

Consoles without rear heat have a centered and lowered ashtray, which makes it more difficult, albeit not impossible.

What color console are you looking for?

I had the same issue as you when I started looking for a console for my 97. I had rear heat but couldn't find a newer one with rear heat. I ended up installing a non-rear heat model in mine. I used the old console to make a template of the cuts and notches I needed to make. I cut out the section on the passenger side for the duct work to pass under using my Dremel. I notched the section on the driver's side for the vent. Then I cut a rectangular hole out in the rear for my heat controls. It turned out perfect and you can't tell that I modified it.

Where does the rear window control switch go with the newer console? I need those cup holders...

In the center of the upright console right above the heater/ac controls. I believe, on the older models, there were fold out cup holders right where the switch is (along with the ECT button, rear window defrost, and the alarm/ seatbelt module.

So I would need to replace the dash panel, as well as the center console to really do it correctly?

I had no idea that the 99+ had an option not to have heat in the rear. Any pics of that?

From my '99 Limited:

Tried to come up with something useful to put in the space where the ashtray is, but haven't figured anything out yet.

In my '97, I located the rear window switch in the skinny vertical pocket of the '99+ console.
Not super-ergo to use, but out of the way, and no wiring extension necessary.

Check out my cloth temporary passengers seat bottom - only been there a few years while I eventually intend to get the leather one repaired.

Nice... Thanks for the pic. This is definitely on my short list.
