OP,
Several things are off here.
First you took the truck to what I assume is an all in one repair shop. Most places like that know very little about 4Runners.
They diagnosed it as the rear diff but for you they aren't able to do the repair. Take it to a driveline shop or somewhere in NJ that is good with Toyota's. Or even the dealer for a quote.
Also, we have a local sections area on this website. Go there and post asking for mechanic recommendation in NJ area.

I had the work done at another shop that diagnosed it to be a problem in the rear. Both places I took it to were consistent with what was wrong. They took it apart and showed me the damaged bearings. They repaired in a day and half and I am extremely pleased with the results. It is noise free and smooth riding now. I had gotten so used to the noise it seemed strange that is was so quiet on this mornings commute. I believe I was charged a reasonable amount.
I would have loved to do this myself but my days of rolling around on the driveway are over....I would rather pay the man and just have it done.

Can you tell us (just to add closure to this thread) what exactly was replaced and how much did it cost you?

If it was noise that you were that use to, I'm guessing it was your pinion bearing. My truck is making the same noise now. I'll get to it. LOL. Guessing you probably spent about $700 ish to have it fixed.
