99+ Floor Console, Roof Console, and Dash Bezel Upgrades to my '97

Again, you don't need the '99 mirror, just the mounting pad (on the right below).

So I'm now focusing on the bezel swap, and am puzzled by what I see in the donor '02 combination switch. It came from a vehicle with ECT, as you can see by the ECT button:







But on the back, there is one "connector" area in the middle that has no pins:







The thing is it had a real connector with wires plugged into it:







So what does one do with this connector, and how can it possibly do anything without any mating pins? Do I just ignore it for the bezel swap?

You may have confirmed everyone’s suspicion that the ECT does nothing, after all. [emoji23]

That's the clock connector. It fits that empty connector and is the cause of many non-working clocks on 3rd gen 4Runners...

Ah, eureka! So it was my mistake "ass-u-ming" that this connector plugged into the pinless wonder on the combination switch side - it must have been plugged into the clock, I just didn't take good notes when yanking things out at the junkyard! Duh, silly me. Thanks Charlie!

Dash Bezel

As a heads up, the wiring of the bezel switches is the most challenging part of the swap, and I devoted a separate thread to that topic - How-to: Wiring a '99+ Bezel Into a '97 - A Comprehensive Tutorial - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum. So I won't discuss wiring in this thread.

What parts to get from the ‘99+ donor.

- Dash bezel, including the combination switch which includes the ECT, defogger, and back window switches
- Y-shaped duct behind bezel
- Hazard switch, its connector, and harness (the connector and harness are not a must, but helpful as I’ll discuss below)
- C23 white connector attaching to the back of the donor combination switch, along with as much of the harness as you can get
- Power outlets at the bottom of the bezel and connectors and wiring harnesses attached to them

Below are some photos of what I got from the donor.

My donor bezel came with real honest-to-goodness wood veneer, covered by a thick layer of plastic. Some of it was discolored and peeling, so I ended up removing it after hitting it with a heat gun first:



I painted the bezel to freshen it up. First I tried silver, but didn’t like how it looked in my truck, it didn't match anything else, plus it was a bit blotchy. So I hit it again with some SEM satin trim black paint:



To do the actual swap (other than all the wiring mods discussed here How-to: Wiring a '99+ Bezel Into a '97 - A Comprehensive Tutorial - Toyota 4Runner Forum - Largest 4Runner Forum), you acquire and prepare the donor components, prepare the '97 harnesses, transfer the clock, install the vents, and button everything up.

And here is how it looks when done:

Thanks, and yes, you do need the mirror base, and the blue harness connector for the overhead console.

sorry I know this is an old thread. But I have a question. I'm looking to do this upgrade so I can fit a scan gauge 2 mount in place of the sunglasses holder. My sunroof was sealed shut with silicone and rubber tape by the previous owner because it leaked. Since I don't plan on fixing it or using it all I would need to function is the two overhead lights. Would it be possible to just get the non-sun roof 1999+ overhead console and wire only the lights? Thanks!

The sunroof and smooth roof headliners have a different contour in that area. You need a matching map light assembly for your headliner.

Ahh gotcha. I assumed they were pretty much the same just one had the controls and one didn't. I'll just find a sunroof one then. Been looking on ebay for some and just from pictures I couldn't have told there was a difference.
