'99 Highlander Coils...I know...

...there is alot of info posted here about them...but I would like to hear from anyone who has installed these springs about what other suspension parts you had to replace in order to put these on.

When I spoke to a parts guy at Tustin Toyota here in SoCal he said he would also replace the supports, bushings, cushions, upper and lower control arms, camber and toe bolts, and front sway bar link......

I wasn't planning to do the control arms and as far as the other stuff, I would like to hear some opinions as to what's really necessary.

It sounds like he was just reading you the parts catalog. No need for control arms, etc. (and really just sounds silly). You won't need to do any of that unless your suspension is worn (and it takes a lot to wear them out).

I would suggest new shocks to go with your new springs.

The parts guy is a moron. I would suggest shocks just because you'll already have them off to do the springs. If you're 150K miles or more, do the lower ball joints and tie rod ends just for piece of mind. Otherwise you're good. I did my sway bar and steering bushings at the same time just because I already had them left over from my other 4Runner.

I put new shocks on when I got the '99 tall springs, but that's only b/c they were old. They're the same as the stock shocks, so you only need to replace them if they're worn out.

Did the parts guy look at your truck to see if the supports, bushings, cushions, upper and lower control arms, camber and toe bolts, and front sway bar link......were worn out? If they're worn or damaged, you'd want to replace them, but simply adding '99 tall springs won't require replacing a bunch of other parts.

I have only had my '02 for about a year, and I haven't done anything to it; its all stock.

I guess I should have a mechanic look at all the suspension and steering parts to see if anything needs replacing.

If anything does I will do it with the istall of the coil springs and new shocks.

Sounds like the parts guy is either a moron or hes on a commission based pay scale. He's trying to up-sell you stuff you don't probably need.

When I did my 01 I put the 99 highlander coils in with new Tokico Trekmaster shocks and I put new top hats on as well. I did make a good choice in my opinion. The only thing that I was debating before I bought the 99's and I do wish I did now was buy the Old Man Emu 906 rear coils. Just for the sole purpose of load capacity in the back, the 99's do sag with some weight on them. But non the less the 99's are still great.

I only put new top hats on was because everything was new up front. The old ones were all rotted too. I put them together myself at work with the wall mounted spring compressor,so much easier..

I just rented the local autoparts store spring compressor and swapped the '99 springs in. Done.

I have them with my original '99 tall springs (they have no sag so I left them). They handle very well, but I think they are harsh on small potholes, etc. at road speed. I have a little under 10k on them, and they have improved after about 5k. Still harsher than I'd like. I might put 906's in back and see if it helps.

I put '99 talls in my truck with the stock e-adjustable struts, the rears were sagged. I put in some spacers in the rear, and there was still a tiny bit of sag unloaded, definitly sagged when loaded. I swapped the rears out for OME 906's, and I now have some positive rake, which looks MUCH better than sagged, the ride isn't any harsher than with the '99 springs, and there is less bodyroll = better handling. I'm very pleased with the '99 tall/OME 906 combo.

you might like the OME 881s up front combined with the 906s in back.

I have ran this before on a previous 4runner and I am about to run it again on my new one. I find the 99 rears springs to be terrible for anything other thatn just making the rear taller. The only thing additional I am adding is a 3/8" top spacer on the 99 fronts to bring it just about level with the rear.
