99 injector replacement questions

'99. SR5. 3.4. 185,000 miles.

Long story short, I replaced one of my injectors (#4, if I recall) about 2 years and less than 10k miles ago. I know I should have done all 6, but I was unemployed at the time.

That solved my CEL and it has run fine ever since, until fairly recently. It has started idling roughly again, and I suspect either the GB remanufactured one I replaced has gone bad, or another one or more have gotten too old. Air filter, plugs and plug wires (all NGK) and fuel filter were all replaced fairly recently.

Local Toyota wants $199 per injector, and they only have one in stock. Screw that noise.

RockAuto has:

GB reman's for $40 ea, plus core.

Airtex/Wells new for $57 ea.
Standard Motor Products new for $58 ea.
Autoline "new" for $74 ea (why do new ones have a $10 core?)
Beck Arney new for $75 ea.

Has anyone actually ever used any of these, and can give me positive or negative feedback on the brands? I have no CEL codes, so I can't point to which cylinder(s) it is.

Thanks

Beck Arnely used to make good copycat Japanese stuff on Taiwan. Sadly, I think most is made in the PRC today and quality has dropped some, though BA is still making some things on Taiwan I have heard as of recent.

I'd mow some lawns, etc. for the OEM injector but would use the BA one if push came to shove....

Beck/Arnley prides themselves on sourcing from quality suppliers, often times they are exact same as OEM. But it's not 100% for certain though. Either way, I would choose the B/A over the other brands listed from RockAuto.

If you do get the B/A ones, please report back!

Yes B/A is just a middle man.

As for the core charge on new ones, they either rebuild the old ones or sell them to a rebuilder to recoup some cost.

I swapped all 6 of mine out in late february with new OEMs from 5-0 performance/5-0 motorsports?

Less than $390 shipped, came packaged well, included O-rings.

The other option is to send them to a place like Dr. Injector or Witchhunter and have them serviced, inspected and cleaned. Can do all 6 for $200 or less.

I bought all six from fiveomotorsport about a year ago and been good so far

Yep - I thought about doing that, but this is my only vehicle, so I can't have it down for that long.

I looked at those, after 12BYotaFan mentioned them. It looks like a good and affordable option. I found these https://www.fiveomotorsport.com/1999-02-4runner-2000-04-tundra-1999-04-tacoma-34l-6-cylinder which look like the correct ones for mine.

I will clean my MAF again, look for old vacuum lines that need replacing (if I recall, I did that a year or 2 ago), and if the rough and low idling persists, I will probably go with the fivemotorsport ones, since they seem to be good.

Thanks for the feedback so far, and please keep the comments coming.

Update

Update. I just replaced all 6 injectors with the ones mentioned above from FiveOmotorsports.

I am not a happy camper. It fired right up, but immediately began idling roughly. Prior to the injector replacement, it only ran rough when it had been running a while and everything was hot.

I shut it down and looked for fuel leaks. I don't see or smell any. I triple checked that everything was reconnected. I had labeled every hose, etc. that I removed, and put everything back. I started it again and it still idled quite rough. I turned it off again, checked my work again, and then cranked it. It turned over, but nothing. I let it set a few minutes, tried again, and it runs, but still roughly.

All vacuum hoses look good. I cleaned the MAF after I initially posted this. No CEL. No fuel smell, and no fuel visible. Everything appears reconnected correctly.

I had disconnected the battery for a couple of hours while I did the replacement. Is it possible that the ECU didn't reset itself during those 2-3 hours, and is still trying to compensate for a bad injector?

I kind of suspect that one of the 2 intake manifold gaskets might be leaking, either because they got old, or maybe I dinged one while doing the work today.

Anyone ever been through this and have any ideas what I should look for?

I just swapped a 2001 engine for the '97 with a blown head gasket. I put in the original intake manifold didn't really look at the injectors......what happens to em, what makes them go bad?

On my plenum gaskets, the plastic coating was coming off, and I may very well have put a ding in one of them while removing and installing the plenum.

I have a pretty strong hunch that is my problem, and was even thinking about it while putting things back together. Like an idiot, I failed to just go ahead and get replacements while I still had it apart. I will buy new ones tonight when my wife gets home and can take me to the store. Then I will have to remove and install the plenum...yet once again.

I just checked with my scanner, and there are no codes. However, I doubt there was enough time to get any codes when it only ran for about 10 minutes in my driveway. It barely ran well enough to even pull it back in my garage.

Only way to know is put the old injectors back and test. Rough idle is usually due to fuel or spark. A vacuum leak might cause high idle, but it shouldn't run rough because a rough idle means one of the cylinders isn't putting out as much power as the others thereby causing harmonics.

Does anyone if Toyota's OBD data puts out any sort of cylinder specific misfire count? I know Fords have a "deeper" set of OBD variables called Mode $06 that lists the percentage misfire on each cylinder which is useful in narrowing down which cylinder is misfiring.

No codes might just mean that your idle isn't bad enough to trip a CEL. The misfires have to be bad enough such that the value hits a certain % before tripping a code.

Check your IAC

Does the IAC affect anything besides idle speed? Mine is running real rough at all rpm's. Plus, it would be extremely coincidental if my IAC happened to quit working right when I replaced the remanufactured OEM injectors. Not that such a coincidence doesn't happen.

I will replace the plenum gaskets tomorrow before I do anything else, and I have a pretty good feeling that will fix the problem. Extra air going into the plenum would definitely screw with how it runs at idle and when revving. I do know that the old gaskets looked rough, and nothing else that I know of has changed.

Check throttle body gasket too

Another update

This is maddening, and extremely frustrating. I replaced the plenum gaskets this morning. They most definitely needed replacing anyway.

Started it up and it purred like a kitten. Idled real smooth. I was grinning ear to ear. As I was going up my driveway for a test drive it started bucking like it was missing, then the idle became rough again.

I can't even put all of the old injectors back in because on one of them, the little white plastic piece on the bottom of the injector broke and stayed behind and I had to pull that piece out with pliers.

Perhaps one or more of the rebuilt OEM injectors I bought from FiveOmotorsports are bad. Perhaps it is something else. I am at a complete loss.
