'99 Limited Climate Control Turns on by Itself

Hi all,

This has happened a couple times before, but while driving around this weekend, it happened probably a dozen times. Just cruising down the road, AC is off, fan is off, and the auto button turns on by itself which turns on the AC and cranks up the fans to the highest setting, as well as changing the fans to blow only at the face. The first couple times it happened I was confused and thought I must have accidentally hit the button, but this weekend I learned that it is, in fact, the climate control having a mind of it's own. It's a little frustrating and I definitely shouted when it turned on by itself.

Anybody have experience with this, or know a fix? It seems like a pretty bizarre thing to happen and I don't know what could be causing it. The only fix I could think of would be to remove the auto button since I never use it. But I'd rather not do that if there's an alternative because it seems very tedious. Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice!

It's pretty common for the limited climate controls to start to act up as they get older, and there's a couple capacitors and other parts that need to be replaced if memory serves. Mines been working great for the past 1 1/2 years since he fixed it.

Going to bump this. The A/C is kicking on by itself more frequently as time goes on. It happened 6 times on my 30-minute drive to work today. Has anybody else had this issue? I couldn't find any other posts related to it turning on by itself, mostly just buttons not working.

I think it has something to do with the "AUTO" button though, cause every time it kicks on, the "AUTO" button is lit up too. I never use the auto feature, so I'm wondering if disconnecting that button will fix the issue? Or is that a bad idea for some reason?

The climate modules go nuts in innumerable ways. I suspect you are facing the first of a series of gremlins you'll encounter with the module. One common cause is solder on the circuit boards getting brittle and failing and causing the various buttons and knobs to perform unexpected functions.. You can take it apart and dive into it using some guidance from a thread I've seen here or you can pop it out and ship it to a couple different folks who are associated (moreso in the past) with this site. I had mine done this way about 1.5 years ago and had the LEDs upgraded (color options) for a few bucks more at the same time. Happy I did that. Quick turnaround & great service.

That is a Very fair deal.

Mine mostly works yet last winter the heater wouldn't work in the front and blasted in the back. Think this is related to the '01 limited climate control unit?

Or more to do with the blend door? Thanks.

I reached out to him and got the same exact message that you had copy/pasted lol. I'll probably end up sending it to him, it's a great price and I'm not a big fan of working on electronics.

HAHA glad to hear he's still at it. I wouldn't count on this service forever if anyone else is on the fence about it....
