99' rear springs question

Has to be a highlander to have tall springs.

yes, the 99 standard springs are still taller than most, but the desired springs are the 99 highlander (or 99 talls.) unless you have the highlander springs, i dont think you will find anyone who is willing to go through all the work to swap them out for maybe a half inch of lift... so i say they are pretty much useless. just my thoughts

What is the color code on your springs? The 99 Highlander springs have a color code of Yellow/Red.

99 talls can be from a Limited or certain SR5's as well. All Highlander's had them, but some Limiteds and SR5's did as well. They should have a red and yellow dot on them.

are you sure about the sr5? not saying they dont but the factory rims for a sr5 are 15" i believe. only the limited had 16" rims. this is according to edmunds.com

If you do a part number search for the rear springs it does show 99 or 99-00 w/ 16" wheels.
However this is not true of the 2000 model year at least.

There is before and after pics of a set of 99 "tall" springs on my 2000 highlander package truck.
Like it was mentioned earlier, the color coding it going to be your best bet to determine what exactly they are.

Most SR5's came FACTORY equipped with 16" rims, it's was a very popular option. Some dealers did equipped 16" rims a few that came from the factory with 15" rims, but that wasn't common, and you can tell the difference by the brake size.

the sr5 had 16" wheels as an option, most sr5s sold had the 16 option. limiteds had 16: standard. and the highlander package was only offered with sr5 and limited. you would have to have the sport hood, factory projector fog lights and the 16 wheels to have the highlander springs(99 talls). now at this point and time some 12 years later, it is very possible and conceivable that people over time have switched out to these springs, even the dealer could have done this through the recall about the rear sag. if you have questions check your fronts. do they have the toyota bilsteins with the blue/yellow blue/pink coils? that is the front 99 talls. if you have those and you have owned the vehicle sense new and its a 99 then you might have gotten lucky and got the 99 talls without getting the highlander package.

My 99 Limited has the tall springs all around, or did, until I replaced the rears with some 906s.

No, but there was only one owner before me, and they kept every receipt for work done to the 4runner, even every gas fill up. I know them well enough in order for them to tell me that they were selling it since they did not want to get the gas gauge fixed to read correctly.
Mine was built in 10/98, if that has any bearing on the situation.

Swapping out the rear springs is easy, having done it a few times now it's a half hour job tops (took about an hour the 1st time). You don't even need an alignment afterwards.

^^ if your mechanically inclined yes, but a lot of people are not...
it is possible that toyota put the springs into other vehicles that did not have the highlander option, as we have seen toyota is notorious for using what ever is lying around... like with gear sets and options there seams to be no rhyme or reason behind it, thought most of the time they stick to what the vin, and option packages say. who knows, all i know, is if you want to be sure you have 99 talls, check the paint codes and to be even safer, only get them from a 1999 4runner.... jmo

It was random what ones got 99 talls besides the Highlanders. I checked out a 99 Limited that didn't have the 99 talls, but it also didn't have a locker so that might be part of it. A 99 Limited in my office parking lot has a locker and the talls. Some SR5's got them like TheDurk's, but I don't think there was any definite reason as to which got them.

Totally. I bought it new and I bought it right off the truck from Toyota in May of 1999. I was on the waiting list for the first manual (so I needed an SR5), and the truck pulled in as I was talking to the Sales manager about when a 5-speed would arrive. So it was NOT a dealer swap. The door tag lists both 15" and 16". Edmunds is wrong.
The fronts are blue/yellow and blue/pink and the shocks were Tokicos, not Bilsteins, all around, until I changed them two years ago for Trekmasters. I do not have factory fogs nor the sport hood.

16" wheels and larger brake rotors were a very popular option package on the 4wd SR5's. SR5 4wd 4runners were very often equipped as such.
The 16" wheels and larger rotors were standard on the 4wd Limited.
