99 sport-good price?

I found a green 99 sport, auto, 4x4, 112K miles for $5,500 I have not seen it in person yet...waiting on a phone call...

I think this is a good price, but wanted to run it by the "experts"...
I may end up buying this instead of building up that rolled 96 in the back yard...I could end up parting it out after all :)

What do you guys think?

Don't tell anyone else where that thing is located. It will be gone in a heartbeat. Sounds like a great price assuming it's in good condition.
 
year and mileage say great deal but if you can post up some more details on condition and check for leaky rear seals (pretty common around 100k miles) and underneath for rust.

I'd love to have it...probably want way more than I am willing to spend.

O.K., the guy just called me.

Here is the low down on the truck.
It is at a well known repair shop.
Kid had it here. He is from Mass., so the truck has some surface rust in places. He fluked out of school, and Mom pulled him back North. Truck needed tranny replaced.
Used tranny installed.
New AC compressor.
New Starter
New L. caliper
New battery
New sway bar end links
Cloth interior - mint.
Rear bumper end pushed in some, no paint damage or dent.
Unknown if has E-locker.
Needs good exterior detail.

I will go see it this afternoon.

If it only has that many miles and the tranny went, I may be more hesitant. Could be a great deal, but it sounds like he "dogged it out" if you know what I mean.

Agreed. I would have to pretty convinced everything else was in great shape.

So the tranny went, i dont really understand how he could dog it, the engine isnt that powerful and when coupled with an auto, donuts and burnouts would be hard to do, and if you guys mean like him gunning it, then well most people do that in there cars.

If you drive an autoatic there are a lot of things you can do to beat the crap out of the vehicle with a small or large engine. The point is the car may have been heavily abused to have the tranny go out that early. It is also possible he did not keep up on the maintenance or he knows nothing about cars and put motor oil in the tranny. It is always best to have it checked out. Low horsepower motors do not always equal a car not being abused.

The Kid probably had the car for 10k miles, the tranny prolly went on him like they normally do on these things, as they are notorious for the milkshake crap. i know how to beat on an auto, but you really gotta try to.

I went through 4 auto transmissions on my 1988 Bronco II that I drove when I was 18. I bought it with 13k and sold it with 61k miles on it. All transmissions were replaced by Ford at different dealerships. I sold it because it could not take the abuse I gave it. Trust me, the vehicle had been through a lot.

That is quite possible, it may run another 200k without a problem. However, as mentioned above, it could be that he wasn't taking the best care of it. It raises a lot of flags for me. When a kid is given a car, they often don't care if they drive an auto like a stick shift, just for fun, hopefully this wasn't the case.

I would only say to be careful and have it checked very well, could be a terrific deal.

My friend was looking for a car about 6 months ago, I spotted a very nice looking (from the outside) Corolla. Having owned one 6 years and read a ton of reviews on them I knew how reliable they were. The guy was selling it for some lady and said it had a "Brand new engine" BIG red flag went up. Grandma let her grandson borrow it for a while. The gentlemen said he did something to the engine and tore it up, so it leaves a big question mark as to if some more things are on their death bed as well.

Taken care of, Corolla engines last forever, this one was not taken care of and I advised my friend to keep looking. The good thing about this 4runner, is it could have been the milkshake or a problem not caused from abuse. Just be careful.
 
Went and saw it yesterday.
Forgot camera... :( sorry.

Anyway, it has the usual undercarrage rust from the rust belt. Not too bad though.
Front bumper, both fenders and hood have some bubbling. The only sheetmetal I could find with rust.
All aluminum parts have the typical salt corrosion white stuff on them.
Interior is pretty good. Could use a good detail. One small heat crack on the dash, 1/2 long.
Pass. front door lock does not work. No biggie.
Starts and runs good. Didn't have tag, so no highway driving yet. If I go back, I will do a good run.
Put it in 4wd high and low, and HAS E-Locker ! it engaged and dis-engaged properly.

As to the tranny, I discussed with the shop manager the transmission and pink milkshake. He said that the fluid looked fine to him. ( got a new radiator anyway, so that is suspect ) 1st gear would hardly move the truck. Once 2nd gear took over, all other gears worked fine. It was replaced with an LKQ used unit with about 85K miles on it.

I offered him $4K He said he would talk to the boss in this morning and let me know....
Ball is in his court.
 
Most of us have no idea how the previous owners of our trucks drove them. We would all like to think that they only drove it to the post office and grocery store twice a week and rubbed it down with a daiper every night, but hey, whaddya gonna do?

I think if the tranny shifts smooth and the engine runs good with no funky idle or acceleration issues, buy it!
