A/C Issue 4th Gen

About 4 months ago I took my runner in to an A/C shop because it wasn't blowing cold air anymore. The guys said there weren't any leaks in the system at the time. Up until last week it was blowing cold until one morning it started feeling warm again even on LO. The two vents on the passenger side aren't as cold as they should be but they're still decently cold. The two driver side vents are straight warm and I need to get it taken care of. Does it seem like I have a leak in my system? Just another thing to add to the to do list.. :fish2:

Start the engine, turn on your a/c, set it to "LO", set Recirculate mode, and let it run for 5 minutes. Open up the hood and determine if your a/c return line is cold to the touch? Also check to see if your compressor is running with minimal cycle time. If it is cycling on/off rapidly, that is a sign you are low on freon.

Your a/c system could be working just fine and your blend/door actuator may be the culprit.

It could be the relay, quite a few of us have had the same issue. Blows cold then next minute starts getting warm, and then cold again. Switch the AC relay and the fog light relay around or purchase a new relay, I would try to switch the relays first to see if that is the problem. There are a number of threads on here regarding the issue.

Are you having to periodically recharge the freon? If so, you may have a leaking evaporator. I had the exact same problem about a year and a half ago. Took it to three different mechanics, all of whom could not find a leak. FINALLY, I found a guy who was extremely familiar with Toyota whom explained the problem to me. Sure enough, after $900.00 later, cold A/C out of all of the vents. You see, the evaporator is BEHIND the dash, against the firewall. Pretty much EVERYTHING has to be removed to get to it. The part is around $350 -400.00 and labor will range from $600 - $800.00 depending on whom you take it to. Do not take my word for it. Find a competent Toyota tech to verify. I wish you luck!

What relay are you referring to? It actually blew cold air for about 5 minutes today so I'm thinking that might actually be it.

I changed out the relay and that wasn't the issue. I'm most likely bringing it in the Goodyear because it has to have a leak somewhere. Unless anyone has any addition advice I'll report back afterwards.

Have them test the evaporator drain for freon. I bet your evaporator is leaking.

Lord he better hope not! That is one heck of a repair. Let's just hope it's one of many other joints or components. Let us know what they say.

No question, it's a "heck of a repair". Cost me a grand and a helluva lot of stress seeing the entire steering column and dash stripped out down to the firewall.
