A/C question - help please

Sounds like you may have a worn out fan clutch. My guess is based on your stating that while underway, your a/c works fine, but when you stop the a/c starts dropping off and the temp goes up.
The fan should pull air with a roar when you first crank it up, as your speed increases, the fan clutch allows it to pull air, but not as much as when you are stopped. The clutch fails to allow the fan to pull air when you are stopped to the capacity it is supposed to and this probably is causing your temp and a/c problems.
If it were your thermostat, it would give you problems whether you are at speed or stopped.

Whatever it is that's causing it to overheat (which I agree the fan clutch is a good place to start), you need to nip this in the bud fast - your A/C is not the priority anymore (and will most likely be fixed by default anyways when you fix the overheating). Everytime your engine gets above normal temp, you're risking warping heads and damaging gaskets among other things which all could be in the thousands to repair. It won't take too many of those overheating sessions (even if it's not going up all the way into the red) before it does major damage.
